Just acquired 1974 TR6 (PI).

On road this morning at running temp, engine cut out. Failed to restart.

Fires up and immediately dies.

Original thought was fuel pump.

RAC tested with vaporised ether and thinks not a fuel supply problem.

Tested distributor/sparks etc. All ok.

He thinks it may be the ignition coil and was rather scathing of make - Intermotor.

Usual mechanic on hols. Any ideas ?

Hi Trevor, and welcome to the forum.

If you dont hear the fuel pump in the boot running when you switch on the key it might be the collision safety cut-out switch. Its next to the wiper motor, grey plastci cylinder. Pull and push the knob on top a few times. They are known to cut-out unexpectedly when driving.

The RAC guy could have checked an injector for spraying - actually so could you! Not difficult. And is the first step in separating PI faults from spark faults.

If we are having bets, my money is on a fuel filter blocked

2nd choice coil overheating (is it new on the car)

If it starts and cuts out it is unlikely to be the dizzy/rotor arm. Also it is a "new car" to the owner so its previous history may be what is causing the problem. The rest period between the engine cutting out and the driver getting it to restart is usually because a few drips of petrol finally get through the filter to allow the engine to start and then immediately cut out again
