Graze
Driving along today just perfectly Backed off accelerator to slow down , car starts backfiring. When I push accelerator again spluttering and crouching and rough idle Checked spark and when I pul off 3 & 4 leads no change in rough idle but can hear spark jumping across gap. Removing 1 & 2 leads cause motor to stall New fuel filter installed 1 week ( maybe 30 miles ago). Quite a bit of crud in old filter makes me think tank needs cleaning Strombg linkages all ok So I'm thinking blocked fuel to Stromberg Where do I start to investigate having never stripped one down before? Do have the Stromberg manual to refer to Advice as always appreciated Graze
graeme
Graze, Just check that the dissy cap hasn't cracked between 3 & 4 before messing with carbs. This will give similar symptoms to your description, a backfire indicates that fuel is there but ignited at the wrong time. Cheers Graeme Edited June 30, 2014 by graeme
Geko
Also check if there's rotor wear (offset) which you can spot by hand or check if there's any filing scraps in the dizzy cap
John Morrison
Diaphragm in suspect carb. John
Graze
Graeme Electronic distributor, rotor and "points" look ok, minor wear on rotor and similar minor wear and scuffing on the 4 contacts. Brushed them off with wet and dry - no difference Stef No obvious metal parts inside cap John Will have a look at diaphragm tomorrow night (have to go out tonight) Will also swap over 3 & 4 leads with some spares just to check its not them Thanks Graze
Lebro
split in diaphram is the usual failure mode on Strombergs Bob.
ctc77965o
strombergs respond to harsh discipline: before spending time on strip down, whack the body of offending carb with a wooden mallet (quite hard)....often a stuck needle valve is permanently fixed with this. not quite the same carb, but similar in basic strip down see here: http://www.xketype.com/e107_plugins/content/content.php?content.

Graze
Dave you were right - tough love solid tap with hammer over sioft timber block (no timber mallet in tool box) fixed it I'll still strip it down and have a look to see if I can remove whatever caused it thanks all Graze
