Hi I am new to this site and wondered if anybody could help. I have a TR8 RHD. With a Rimmer bros converted SD1 Rack. It has a problem leaking fluid from rivets which hold a ring inside the tube.. I have heard that the Triumph Stag power rack will fit and wondered if anybody could confirm this or could my rack be rebuilt... I am from Hampshire... Cheers

First thing first - is it a TR8? Or a converted TR7...

If the first - then it should be easy to get the correct parts for a rack rebuild.
If the second - could be just about anything picked together. . .

The Stag had a similar/related rack IN SOME OF THE CARS, not all of the cars...

The car started life as a TR7. As far as I know the rack is a Rimmer bros conversion which was done about 14 yrs ago, so not much info on it as they no longer do the conversion... If I could find out about the stag rack I will get one. I suppose the best way is to measure everything and go from there.

Hi "My TR8"

Welcome to the forum, Rimmer Bros still show some parts for their power steering rack conversions - it is probably worth having a word with them and seeing what they suggest about refurbishment costs.

The other route would be to look up your local power steering services company "Google is your friend" - sadly removing the rack isn't the nicest of jobs but this will be a fairly standard rack and should be restorable.

I don't know if anybody else has local knowledge for your area.

Regards

Ian

Thanks for replying ian. I have already removed the rack from the car. Bìt of a job but done now. I have contacted Rimmers no luck they would sell me one for a kings ransom. I just need top know about this stag rack and if it fits the Tr as this would save time and poss money. Cheers Rich.

I don't know if the Stag rack would fit. I have a Stag and the rack is off and being replaced with a new one sat on the floor of my garage. The Stag is of course a power steering rack and if you visit the Stag forum there's dozens of posts bemoaning finding a reconditioned rack that is of satisfactory quality, some people having to fit up to 3 before achieving a satisfactory conclusion. They do seem to suffer with fluid leaks into the rubber boots apart from the other general malaise suffered by all steering racks. Cost for buying a rack is about £130 with an excess of £65 if they don't receive your rack for reconditioning.

After reviewing all the comments on the forum my choice was to go with LD Parts who offer a pretty snappy delivery service on parts offered online, and have had decent approval from members who have used them. Search on Google will find them if you decide to go the Stag route.

Cheers mike... I was only going the stag route because that's what had been suggested. I still have my converted SD1 rack which I have removed from the car.. I will try to find someone to do the repair and re seal it... It has worked for 12 yrs, hopefully if I can find someone it will go on for a few more . cheers Rich..

If you are in Hampshire you could speak to Ian Tinsey at Crucial Automatics in Titchfield on 01329 845040. Yes they are an auto box specialist but Ian has a vast knowledge of all things TR7/TR8 so he might be able to help or advise.

I have not heard of a Stag rack fitting in the TR7 but if they do fit & only cost about £200 then a lot of people could be interested. How much did that genuine RHD TR8 rack go for a few years ago, Odd?
