Hi all,

I'm looking for a book that would take me through the basics and to some extent more advanced procedures of engine tuning.

The nearest I can find is from the Speedpro series called 'How to build & power tune distributor ignition systems'?

Ideally it would take me back to the basics of the 4 stroke cycle and lead me through the finer points of tuning. Not quite 'an idiots guide' if you get my drift.

I already have the 'How to improve TR6' by Roger Williams and 'How to restore TR6' by Roger Williams.

Any suggestions would be very useful.

Thanks

Jim

Hi Jim,

I recommend Phil Irving’s “Tuning for Speed” This is an excellent engine tuning reference book.

Although first written in 1948 and focussing on air-cooled motorcycle racing engines, much of the text is still relerevant today.

I have the 1956 3rd edition; I think it went to the 5th edition in 1969.

In the 60 ties Irving was employed by Jack Brabham to design engines for Brabham’s FI racing cars; from the recent stuff in the press, I think Brabham won with the Irving designed engine in 1966.

Specialist bookshops will sell copies for around £100, but 2nd hand copies are readily avaiable at Autojumbles for around £10.

Hope this helps………………Jerry

Kastner's "Triumph Preparation Handbook", which was available from the Register's on-line shop (worth checking) is specific to TRs, both 4-pot and 6-pot, and is written by a man who started doing this sort of thing in the 1950s and whose cars were winners year after year.

Steve,

This is a picture of West Hartlepool ST dealer, Robert Robinson.

My local ST dealer in the 70's was the Cleveland Car Company who had garages in Middlesbrough and Darlington although I can find no photos.

Cheers

I thought I had an (un-autographed) copy of this book amongst a collection of 15 other TR/4cyl books that are about to hit the 'for sale section', however, it seems to have been given away already. If it turns up, you are welcome to it as I suspect it won't help me with an A30 !

It's a great racing formula if it is a clue.

Supposed to be a very level playing field.

Watched it at oulton park. A good circuit for this class of racing. And full on racing it is too.

But McM you may just fancy an A30 to trundle about in with a layby picnic to watch the world go by ?

Some how I doubt it !!

A35 Academy, exciting new series, but also very historic and very expensive.

"allows drivers to start racing with an Austin A35 with a price tag of just £15,000" Just!

When I first saw it, I hoped it would be a new low-cost entry series, like 750MC's Stock Hatch, but for classics.

Back on track, Veloce publishing do several monographs on cylinder heads, camshafts and engine blue-printing, as well as car-specific offers:
