Overdrive not working

Recommended Posts

Having fitted a stag gearbox to my tr6, the overdrive now does not wantto work. When it was bolted to the tr6 box it was working fine, but now its bolted to the stag box it don't wanna know. I have tried adjusting the rod, that operates ok. The solenoid works ok. I've seen you can bleed them, and tried that nothing coming out. Its got 2 litres of oil in it. Any ideas?

Cheers

Steve

I had a similar problem after my gearbox was rebuilt and the original well functioning overdrive was fixed to it. I took the gearbox out again and took it back to the rebuilders who checked the overdrive was building pressure etc, which it was, but yet again it refused to click in.

I had the car up on axle stands with the wheels off so I could run it in gear and was just abou to throw my toys out the pram, when in desperation I dissengaged the overdrive (very important!!!) and ran it at 3000 revs in reverse. Lo and behold when I ran it in second it clicked in, happy days!

I then ran it on the road and it clicked in and out ok, but then stuck on after a longer run. I managed to free this up and since then it has been as good as gold. I assume something was sticking inside, which eventually freed up after a while.

A racing specialist I consulted did say only use old fashioned 20/50 in the gearbox as he had stripped down gearboxes that had used EP oils which seemed to have got sticky. Mine is now full of 20/50 so perhaps that cleaned it out! Well worth giving it a long run before starting to strip things out again.

Good luck

Pete
