TR6 overdrive problem

Recommended Posts

Apologies if this has been raised previously but can't find anything.

Symptoms;

Engine/ g'box cold - o/d works perfectly.

Engine/ g'box at full working temp' (approx' 20 miles) - tries to engage but "slides" and usually doesn't properly engage. Sometimes will engage but any tiny movement of the steering column selector stalk results in momentary disengage and then re-engage.

Aug 1973 model(125hp) (believe J type o/d on 3rd and 4th).

Main o/d unit previously removed and rebuilt professionally.

Suggestions please? Not too technical!!

Or recommend o/d specialist in Reading/ Basingstoke area.

Thanks all.

Sounds like the connection stalk in the steering coloum needs some attention, could be a loose wire or dirty contacts on the switch, when you move the steering the it's causing a disconnect. These over drives need high gear box oil pressure to engage, when the oil is cold the pressure is high, as per the previous mail check the oil may just be on the limit. There is a number of orings and oil strainers on the bottom that can be changed, not possible to do it with the gearbox still in the car though.

Take off the cowl and check if any wires are able to touch the steering column you only need one strand to create the symptoms you describe. If so wrap some insulating tape around the switch body. The latter was my problem.

Many thanks for all your replies, especially the link to o/d troubleshooting.

The gearbox oil was checked and changed by Rees Eng', Aldershot and a small amount of debris found, but the problem continues. They were especially aware of the correct level requirement. To be honest I am not sure if it occurs on both 3rd and 4th. I believe it affects 3rd first and when 4th is also affected then 3rd does not function at all (in o/d).

I have a TRR friend who is going to help me check out the electrical side.

I am minded to buy a new column stalk and solenoid and replace each in turn and test, to see if either solves the problem. The gear switches on top of the o/d unit are difficult to access so will be left to last!

You seem to have already diagnosed the column switch as intermittent so that would be the first thing to change were it mine. I'd also consider putting a test lamp across the supply to the solenoid to verify the suspect switch whilst driving.

The g/box switches especially by the sound of it 3rd/4th switch would be worth checking as well. The current stock of repro stalk switches are not the best either, quite often falling to bits after a few uses.

Stuart.
