PaulR
Hi All Just about to begin the rebuilding of my '64 TR4 Overdrive Gearbox and want to replace the rear seal which I believe to be at the end of the O/D casing My question is whether I have to dismantle the O/D to do this or if I can prise it out without dismantling. The O/D works perfectly and so I am reluctant to dismantle. Any thoughts please Paul
AlanT
The Tranmission section on here by Greasy-Hands may help. http://www.vtr.org/maintain-index.shtml I had mine completely to bits so can't be sure but I would expect that you can do this. The hex-nut on the end will be very tight I expect. You will need a flat-bar bolted to the flange. The tail-shaft bearings on mine were the tightest thing I have every had to pull. I pressed them out with a piece of 1/8 stainless plate bearing agianst the hex nut, partially undone of course. Afterwards the stainless plate had a dimpled witness mark of the hex-nut pressed into it. The shock released when this popped left my hand numb for a few days. This was the only bit of the OD dismantle that gave any trouble at all. So I hope you can get the seal out without all this. I seem to remember just winding in a new seal with the flange nut and some packing washers.
dingle
I changed the rear seal in 2 ODs (A type) recently without removing the annulus or bearings. What made it easy was the use of a lever type seal puller that has a hook to engage the seal. Berry
