JJC
Turning out a cupboard, I very nearly put this mag in the recycling, just in time saw a "reader's car survey" of the TR2 and 3. Interesting reading. Apparently 78% of respondents were on Michelin Xs. Interestingly only 0.7% admit to having a 2.2 engine. That looks like only one person owning up! ianc
Most of us ran our TRs on Michelin X in those days - lasted for ever, but scary when rain fell after a prolonged dry period. I can remember involuntarily executing a 180 degree turn as my TR2 left Hyde Park corner on an August day, even though, knowing that the shower would have made the road slippery, I had reduced speed considerably! I had to reverse down the road some distance from the roundabout's exit before I could turn the car round. Eventually, I wore out the Xs and changed to G800s - a revelation! billy l
I found the X's really difficult to wear out, in fact the walls seemed to give out long before the tread.
Ian Vincent
In 1967 I was working on a construction site and driving company Ford Anglia 105e and like all company cars it was shod with Michelin Xs. Longest lasting tyres you could buy I suspect but minimal grip on the wet. I wasn't lucky enough to just to a 180, I put my car through a hedge. Rgds Ian
Don Elliott
In 1990 as I finished my TR3A body-off restoration, I bought 5 Michelin 165 - 15 R tyres. I drove 43,000 miles on those same 4 main tyres but started to get bias ply separation in 2000, so I had to change them. The spare which I never used is now 25 years old since manufacture and my present Vredesteins will be 10 year old this spring - so it'll be time to change them. I never want to drive on tyres that are more that 10 years old. Edited February 14, 2014 by Don Elliott
BrianC
Xs were dangerous but Xs one end and XASs at the other were lethal and scared the **** out of me as a new TR3A driver in 1972. Fortunately, a local tyre specialist did me a good deal so that I could have XASs all round - the best part of that car (the 'Hammerite Horror"). Sadly, the wheels and tyres were temporarily on my TR4A when I sold it and I've never been able to afford XASs again.
