dj_jones
My son has a 1966 4a, which has the standard (non leather covered) steering wheel fitted, and last year at a show, we bought a leather covered 4a wheel, it's exactly the same design as the one currently on the car, but with the leather covering, which looks like it's original. Can anyone tell me : Would it be from a later 4a, or Was it a factory option, or Is it a custom job See attached pic Cheers Dave Jones
tony13579
I can't say if it was original or not but there was one on ebay with the leather binding last month and it sold for about £122 leather binding tape was easy to buy for cycle handlebars so it may have been a popular home modification. dj_jones
Hi Tony, It's definitely not cycle binding tape, which I presume would be applied as on handlebars around and around the circumference. This is one piece of leather with the join at the bottom spoke. Also where each set of spokes meets the rim there is a groove cut in the plastic to accomodate the leather as it goes across the plastic, which suggests it was always leather covered. dj_jones
Hi John, Do you remember what year the car was ?
JRCWeedon
I think it was 1967 dark blue with a white hood - I thought it was the business! Regards John
dj_jones
Maybe that means they were fitted to later cars ??
toddysport
I believe Vitesse steering wheels are very similar, could either one be one of those?
dj_jones
They're similar, but noticably differrent, the spokes meet the centre hub at 9,3,6 o'clock on the vitesse, and 10,2,6 o'clock on TR4/A's. Plus TR wheels are an inch or so bigger.
toddysport
Does that mean the above picture of the wheel; is from a Vitesse Richard
dj_jones
No, above is a TR4a wheel, notice that the side spokes join above the centre of the boss, i.e 10 & 2 o'clock
