replacing cill ?

Recommended Posts

my nearside cills ends are rotten , at the back its only about 50mm , at the front its about 200mm , I am thinking of repairing these sections rather than replacing the complete cill, The rest of the cill is very sound and it seems I could be looking for trouble by replacing especially with todays panels, is this a good plan ?

thanks

Well it's a plan.

Lots of people tend to think the rotten bits you see are the worst ! With the remaining panel that's hidden probably the same or marginally better ! Maybe this is where the the small inspection camera pushed up the sill pays for itself ! The decision may become easier if you roll back the carpets, it's unlikely the floors have survived unsullied, although again maybe a local patch after cutting out rot will suffice.

If your car is a UK car it's likely to have suffered the worst ravages, if a Californian import less so. Peter Fenlon on the TR4 forum is doing a great job on an imported US car part replacing the sills, and he's completed another previously in the same manner so he's the man to take advice from.

hi

thanks for that, floors are in very good condition, only a couple of small repairs needed, definitely no floor pans needed, Car is fully stripped so all exposed, looking down cill , all good.

Hi Len

I have similar issues, sills rotten but floorpans and rest of car good. I need to take some action as it has failed the last mot (not because the rust is any worse than it was 10 years ago, but because the tests seem to be tightening up). I would like to replace them in the long term but the costs are prohibitive for me at the moment. That leaves repair, I wondered if anyone could recommend a body shop in the south London \ Kent area which could sensitively patch up the original sills in order that I can keep the car on the road in the interim?

I hate to have it shut up in the garage unused as it is running great at the moment and has a good strong chassis, needs to be used!

Thanks

hi Phil

I have opted to repair my cill ends, its not a case of finance ,more a case of the expected problems dealing with difficult to fit parts , If the repairs are welded properly I don't see a problem, in honesty I think I would rather renew but the idea of struggling with panels that don't fit puts me off. I remember fitting cills to my Stag a few years ago, it took a while trying to get it all lined up properly and that was when panels were good !

sorry I cant recommend anyone to help you out, I wish I could help but am in quite deep on my own project !

They came from Moss and the general view here is they're pretty good. The ones we took off were an earlier repair and were solid but the inner sills where the floor pan turns down were a bit of a mess. The nearside has all lined up well the stainless strip will fit and the end caps are in. So yes they seem ok. What looked externally like small corrosion repairs turned out to be a bit more than that when I cut the old sills off and could really see what was going on. JJC

Hi Len,

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I have very limited skills when it comes to bodywork, so need to enlist professional help this time (I do plan on learning at some point). I got a quote from a specialist and one of the reasons it was so high was because they were well aware of the difficulties of getting the replacement panels to fit correctly. Having read the previous posts I suspect that more rot lurks within the places you can't see on my car. I think maybe I will get a few more quotes and see how they compare.

I doubt if you will get a meaningful quote until you have removed the outer sills. As someone said previously if you have a UK car there might be more corrosion than you think. Do you know if the sills are original? You can tell by looking at the welds on the top of the sill (usually). If the wings are off you can see the condition of the Aand B posts. If you post a couple of pictures I'm sure one of the experts would give a view. JJC
