wmilton
Help I have a metallic clattering sound coming from the front of my engine. It sounds as if it is coming from inside the timing chain cover. Strange thing is, the sound is not always present and it is not in sync when I rev the engine, as I would expect. It just sounds like something is being thrown around. Any thoughts as to what this could be, and could it cause serious damage? Many Thanks Bill
Jersey Royal
Bill Could be your tensioner is worn out, it tensions the timing chain. Only way to tell is to remove the timing cover. Cheers GUY For illustration see here Part no 36 http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID600006 Edited November 17, 2013 by Jersey Royal

Denis
I once had that happen with my TR4, when part of the Timing chain tensioner broke off! It was an easy home fix.
poolboy
You might temporarily disconnect the fan belt so that the water pump and alternator are not spinning. It wouldn't hurt to eliminate those 2 as the source.
Peter Cobbold
Long screwdriver to ear to locate it, but beware of fan!
