Rodbr
Got one of these classic ciggy lighters which save dropping a glowing lighter in your lap. Only slight problem is that the element is burnt out. Any suggestions how repair and what sort of rated wire to use. I was thinking of using the wire from single bar electric fire. Must be similar stuff to that used in a toaster.
stuart
Just use the guts out of a modern one. Stuart.
Rodbr
Unfortunately not the same. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Trico-Cig-lit-Motorists-Lighter-New-Old-Stock-Great-Accessory-/370582727918?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item564873acee You just push the ciggy in and the chromey bit in and it touches the other side of the live connection and the element glows. Obviously a bit more techy techy than just a few wraps of wire soldered at the ends to the brass strips. Worked for two microseconds and than burnt through. Rip apart an old toaster? stillp
As you said, try the wire out of a toaster, or an electric fire. What have you got to lose? I used to have one of those in my Singer Chamois!
Don H.
Typically a Nickel-Chromium wire, or Nichrome. Here's one source, from a company I've done business with for years: http://www.omega.com/pptst/NI80.html I'd plan to crimp (or I guess, weld) the wire in place -- solder would melt away the first time you heated the filament. Scavenging from a discarded device with a heating element sounds like a fine approach.
V8 Lady
Search "vintage cigarette lighter" in car parts and accessories on ebay. Then you will find complete centre component for a few pounds and insert in the bracker from yours ? Probably easier?
SuzanneH
Or give up smoking, much harder but worth it! Sue
stillp
Good point Sue. Or if that's too hard (been there, done that!) just stop for about 3 1/2 days and you'll save enough to buy that NOS one on ebay!
