VUX listed on ebay

There are some pretty daft TR6 prices around at the moment and that is certainly one of them. Did the buyer not like the car, was it a disapointment, or does he just want to make a quick buck. Its a free market, but there are now too many 6s over 20k where only the very top cars should be.

I do not quite agree. You should buy stuff they do not make any more if you wish to speculate on price - just think about land.

If someone wishes to pay good money for something that is rare or with finite supply, they should be permitted to, the price they pay being what they believe to be correct for the item they desire, the market will self regulate the price.

Maybe it is the the middle men who buy for 1 and sell for 100 we really object to.

PS Perhaps all TR6's should be at least 20 k then all real TR's will be worth even more........

I disagree with David's comments regarding daft prices for TR6, as with most things it is worth what someone is prepared to pay and prices will then level accordingly. Certainly you could pay a lot less but then spend huge amounts of money on a lesser car to bring it up to that sort of standard.

We don't know what Andrew sold it for but in his original post discussed here, he seemed happy with the price. The dealer would have naturally added his mark up, what, £3,4 or 5k?

 

The car will now be sold with a comforting warranty and dealer back up, something that may well atrract another new TR owner into the fold. Not everyone is confident on the spanners and these cars need to be right to start with then need more attention than a modern car. I think the price is not so much about speculation than the dealer covering himself and having a nice shiny example on his forecourt.

 

I've bought a couple of used Porsche in the past (the Boxster still on the drive). Because I don't understand them, both were bought from specialist independents for peace of mind. No doubt the dealer made a nice margin but more importantly I knew I could walk into the showroom and pick up a good one. How many TRs did the dealer look at before he chose Andrew's?

Folks - I don't see the big deal with the car being on eBay. If you actually look at the eBay add you will see it is a trade listing from a well known TR dealer (who is also a forumite). The car is also on the dealer's own web site and is listed on Car & Classic. All just sensible marketing I would have thought. In my humble opinion the chap concerned knows his TR's bloody well and is entirely realistic about pricing. If you look at his web site you will find he really does try to stick to top notch vehicles and I have no doubt VUX fits into this category.

 

I have no connection with the chap presently offering VUX for sale other than being a (more than once) satisfied customer. I can also say from personal experience that he has very good engineering back up and is good to deal with if there ever are any technical problems.

Guys, I bought VUX direct from Andrew Smith (Classic Marks Sports Cars Ltd) and it is one of the best TR6's I have seen in a long time, The car has had a total body off restoration in the past, the paintwork, mechanicals, chassis history file is superb with masses of detail on work done and parts used.....

 

It is worth the asking price, I have viewed several TR6 cars recently in the £20k - £30k plus price band and some of the cars are absolutely awful, some are with general classic car dealers that do not know any better (as they are not TR specialists and some of the other TR6's are with private individuals that do not know any better or paid to much when they bought their cars originally.........

 

If you look back over David Johnson's post's, it is not the first time he has made unprofessional, crafty, uneducated comments in relation to dealers and specifically my business.... I can't see how he can justify these comments in relation to me or Andrew's TR6 without seeing it..!!!

VUX I have looked at in some detail in the past, I'd certainly consider it a very high quality TR6 indeed - no ifs or buts about that.

 

The market will decide its value.

 

I would expect to see any good car command considerably more as a retail dealer sale than it might have achieved as a private sale or as a traditional auction sale. There is a significantly greater degree of statutory protection available to the purchaser if he is buying from a proper retailer, and for many buyers that is a worthwhile reassurance.

 

No such thing as a free lunch - you buy retail and pay a premium price for the protection that implies. Or you buy privately or at auction and accept a substantially greater degree of personal risk.

Markets change...In the late 1970's I remember turning down a Ferrari 365 for £1,200 and Ferrari Dino for £2,800, and struggling to sell my immaculate Red Maserati V8 and only getting 3 grand for it! And in 1977 sold my Red 4.2 E Type Jag for £1,535.00...Now look what they're worth!!!

£20k for a Eurobox convertible or £20k for a very clean TR6? No contest really. The latter will not depreciate like the former and will be far cheaper to maintain. The difference between the purchase price and the selling price for a dealer is not his profit (Wheeler Dealers is a TV show)!

Some people obviously have their vehicles under-insured.

I think you’re stretching the point a little. My (as yet short) experience is that the 6 is considerably more expensive to run, measured on a cost-per-mile basis and in absolute cash terms, than my Audi A5 daily driver.

 

However, this is straying from the issue. It is common in other marque-specific forums to pillory dealers (so often referred to as ‘stealers’), in circumstances where they provide a specific and commercial service. I see that it is a little different with our type of car, in that the dealerships are not manufacturer-approved, but the issue remains the same, that they provide a degree of assurance, some rudimentary form of guarantee and point of recourse in the event of disappointment. Knowledgeable dealers are not charities and, not unfairly, aim for the highest price they can achieve.

 

Indeed, the price is entirely market-responsive and it seems soemwhat pointless railing against vendors offering vehicles at a premium rate. If somebody is prepared to pay the price, the price-point is right.

 

I bought my 6 from a dealer, but, with hindsight, not a specialist and with an inadequate warranty. Years ago, I made the same mistake (I’m a slow learner) buying an MGB GT near Evesham and was severely burnt. So far, I have no reason for worrying that the dealer I bought from was anything other than a genuine enthusiast, but I would have been prepared to pay slightly more for the same car and drive away feeling that I really had no reason for worry. For the inexperienced, it is a comfort worth paying for.

It's the avoidance of people with your attitude to TR prices that waffle on with an uninformed opinion that I wanted to avoid, and the main reason why I decided not to sell VUX privately. Not because I can't handle such people in a confrontational exchange, but to save me from tyre-kickers and, above all, to protect them!

 

VUX is an excellent TR6 and all who have seen it, been in it or otherwise admired it will testify (and have done) - I sold VUX to Mark (Classic Marks) because he is someone I trust, has an excellent reputation and only buys quality cars and therefore finds the right buyer - something I wanted for VUX.

 

In fact, I do not believe for one minute that you did not read the full eBay advert as you claim, but seemingly just took (yet) another opportunity to take an unfounded swipe at Mark.

 

As an aside, Mark has just sold a TR6 to a friend of mine who had been looking for a good TR6 for a while - he bought the car on my recommendation of Mark and his reputation. Mark didn't let either of use down.

Having been through the buying process earlier in the year (see detailed thread) I can only tell you that I would pay a premium for buying from a communally known and respected industry specialist or from a trusted TR custodian like Andrew. There are many dealers who give their lot a bad name as we all know.

 

I was lucky to find "OAW" in the Netherlands through connections on this forum. A subsequent valuation proved that I had bought sensibly and well.

 

I agree that markets determine prices (VUX remains unsold but it can only be a matter of time) and I hope for all of us that the fashion of viewing classic cars as a safe investment class asset perculates down to all of us who have invested in preserving these fantastic cars on the road. Values should remain stable if not increase for these cars.

 

Whilst David is perfectly entitled to his opinion - perhaps we could all be apprised of the need to moderate explosive language and opinions when passionate subjects are involved...

What a load of hot air over nowt :D Mark will have inspected the car and priced it accordingly.Andrew excepted his offer deal done,both happy.

 

Good luck with the sale Mark and yes I have seen the car not a lot wrong with it at all ;) but it's RED :ph34r::lol:
