Tr3A Steering Rack Source

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

My 3a is LHD annd fitted with a steering rack.

I am doing bodywork at the moment but am giving serious consideration

to converting her to RHD.

I dont really want to cough up 500 quid for a RTR steering rack to suit.

Any tips advice on a source or type of rack i should be looking for.

Thanks Very Much

Cheers

GUY

Hi Guy,

I've been doing some investigations on converting my 3A to R&P, and what I seem to be discovering is that 2 main rack types are used - modified TR7 (by RTR and some Moss and others) and classic Mini (some Moss and others). A few also seem to have used early Escort.

I'm thinking the Mini route is the way I'll go - the LHD TR3A installation will use a RHD Mini rack, which should be easy to source.

I'd guess that if you can identify the rack you've got at present, you just need the "other" hand of rack and the rest of the stuff should transfer over, as from what I've been able to find out the only difference between the RHD and LHD conversions is the steering rack. (Hence some LHD ones are often cheaper because they use an easily sourced RHD steering rack.)

Just my personal findings for what they're worth.......

If its a Moss kit then to convert to R/hand drive you need a L/hand drive BL Mini rack. Depends on the shell whether you will need to cut the bulkhead holes and you will obviously need a dash and a throttle pedal as well.

Stupid question, but the rack on the car i think is possibly a mini one. If it is cant i just turn

it around?

Ummmm, NO, Guy!

When you turn the rack around the steering will work in the opposite sense - you'd have to turn the wheel left to go right and vice versa!

(it would work if you turned it round and fitted it upside down, but that makes the column kinda difficult!)

John

Hah! Maybe for use as a drunk-driving simulator? It would be a hoot.

One summer during university working double shifts in a paper mill I was driving back to my place in a condition that was probably way too tired to be on the road. As I was almost drifting off asleep I can remember wondering why the car wasn't responding to steering inputs like it should. I'd been driving rear wheel steer fork lifts for sixteen hours and had gotten used to the rear swinging around. It seemed odd that the car wasn't driving that way. Sheesh...

Thirdededededed......................you know it make sense.

Thanks Paul and Brian

I appreciate your thoughts

Andrew

I dont know it makes sense, honestly :)

I havent had experience of a steering box, my Tr3 was fiitted with the existing rack and pinion.

So i imagine to convert back to original spec, with no exchange is going to cost mucho spondulicks.

Cheers

Actually there should be quite a few original steering boxes laying around now as a lot of people have converted to rack and pinion. The problem being the reason they were converted was because the steering boxes were knackered due to poor maintenance over the years. Decent replacement parts for them are now hard to come by.

Hi Rod

Thanks.

If i keep car in LHD , i dont have any issues with the Rack currently fitted or set up.

Its not an urgent decision as i have plenty work to do on body.

However think i will stick with a set up as close to my tr6 as possible, which means R and P. My front

suspension on the 3 is all Tr6.

Cheers

GUY
