Who sells uprated thrust washers?

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Measured my end float this evening on the 6, its a 73 CR model. Checked a few times and confirmed its 0.012 inch. Book recommends 0.006 - 0.008 so I need to do some work. Is it worth going for an uprated thrust washer set and if so who should I turn to?

Thanks as always.

Regards

Richard

Hi Richard,

Any good engine machine shop will supply good quality oversized or undersized thrust washers, just tell them what size you'd like front & rear. Be best to try the specialist TR workshops first.

Richard.

You probably don't need a custom set of thrust washers.

The key thing is to check thrust washers before they wear out and replace with the correct size. You've identified that they are staring to wear so changing them now will prevent major woes from occurring.

Problems only really occur if they have been allowed to wear so much that they drop out or get squeezed out/rotate.

Custom thrusts probably come into their own to rescue a block that might otherwise end up being scrapped because the thrusts have fallen out.

What you'll need to do is remove the existing thrusts, replace them with the same size (usually stamped as standard or however many thou oversize) and re-measure the end float. You may need to get some oversizes (they come in a range of different oversizes) and mix & match to get the end flat into tolerance again. It is vital not to have too small an end float other wise there is a risk of the bearing picking up and causing major damage to block and crank.
