Jersey Royal
Chaps, Looking at Painted 60 spoke wires wheels from Tr Shop. XW452S, Any experiences with them? Before i commit myself. Thanks Guy
Menno van Rij
Got these as my b/day present from my wife back 09. I have used them ever since my car's back on the road. No problems, no comments. Off course, caveat emptor and be sure to use an inner tire and rim tape (or how it's called in English) Menno
Jersey Royal
Menno, So yours are Tr Shop one? I had a price from Tr shop for 60 spoke 4.5 x 15 Painted @ £90 a piece. Seems cheap. They did say also that tubes were not required. I already have the hubs and spinners as the car was fitted with wires when i got it, each wheel was missing spokes, and didnt look or sound safe. You have answered another question i have and that was , what is the lifespan of a wire wheel in normal use? Yours being 3 + years old. Cheers Guy
Andrew Smith
Guy, I'm pretty sure the TR SHop wires are made by MWS, which are also supplied by Moss and most of the usual suspects, so buy from the cheapest supplier available. Edit: New MWS wires are tubeless, so no need for inner tubes, but I do carry one as a spare. MWS: http://www.mwsint.com/site/cms/contentChapterView.asp?chapter=1 TuRK has MWS chrome wires (7,000 miles) and a painted spare and no problems so far. Cheers Andrew -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks Andrew. A very useful link. The other poblem i would have living on my rock is no one who could relaibly balance the wheels. My plan therefore was to get them done overhere, then if i bring the car to Malvern get them checked and rebalanced en route to Malvern from Poole. However i see MWS do a tyre fitting service, so i have asked them for an overall price/ quote, ie wheels , tyres fitted and balanced. They use Blockley tyres, from quick research i haven found any negatives Aint cheap tyres though http://www.blockleytyre.com/page2.htm Thanks Guy Edited February 17, 2013 by Jersey Royal
RogerH
Hi Guy, to overcome your lack of W/W balancing facilities. I had the same problem. So, I made an adaptor that allowed the W/W to fit a standard balancing machine. Get yourself a worn/used splined adaptor. Fill the central hole with nylon etc Bore this out to the size of your local balancing machine mandrel. The adaptor fits on the machine. The wheel fits on the adaptor. Get a tatty spinner and put in a hole to allow the balancing machine mandrel to pass through. Also skim the outer face of the spinner so that it is flat to allow the machine nut to lock against. It sounds a lot of effort but lasts forever. Roger
Andrew Smith
Hi Guy, I bought my tyres from Mytyres and had them deivered to MWS who fitted and blanced them. Mytyres: http://www.mytyres.co.uk/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?dsco=110&cart_id=39594868.110.20746&Cookie=&s_p=index If your current wheels could get you to Malvern I'm happy collect the new wheels from MWS (with tyres fittes etc) and bring them to Malven if you wish; if not MWS, then whoever you buy your wires from will deliver to MWS too. Edit: then flog the old wheels and tyres at Malvern - job done! Cheers Andrew Edited February 17, 2013 by Andrew Smith
Jersey Royal
Thanks Roger great idea, too clever for me, but will have a chat with my friendly tyre fitting" man" if i get really stuck. Andrew, Thats very kind of you. i have looked again at Mws site and see that they do other tyres also , but not listed. Thing for me is that any goods i buy in the Uk and are delivered to me on my rock come VAT free, we dont have to pay it as we dont benefit from it. However shipping to the "Rock" is always pricey. Will see what comes back from my enquires and bear My Tryes in mind. Thank You GUY

I have an old spinner that I have bored the centre to take the jig I made to be able to put my wheels up on the bench and clean them, sitting down like a gentleman, much easier to get at the backs of the wheels too. Jersey Royal
For Info MWS got back to me this morning, they can supply me wires with tyres fitted and balanced, delivery 50 quid. They can supply a good selection of tyres as well. I am impressed with their prices service and customer care. Here my 3a with her original wires which are stuffed I have also had an e mail from Minilite Uk, and delivery of Black centres polished rims are about the same. I would not have any problems with getting tyres fitted and balanced localy. Impressed with their service also Just like Haralds beautiful Tr6 shown below Have also thought of just keeping my old Tr6 steel wheels on with centres, need new chrome rings as one is damaged, interesting two of the tyres are 12 years old, plenty of tread no cracks etc, but tyres should be replaced at six years old. So new rubber all round required. Decisions decisions Heres another idea fit Revolutions, i love black wheels. Saw a lovely silver Tr3 at Malvern with them fitted, looked great. Got some thinking to do. Cheers Guy Edited February 18, 2013 by Jersey Royal
Bald Rick
Guy I think knock on minilites look good on a 3. I'm sure you can remember Paul's (UVC 166) car. Just a thought Tony
tomfpurves
Dear Guy I had new MWS wheels fitted to my 3A last year by a specialist last year. Despite the fact they said that they had been carefully balanced there was a vibration about 70mph. I took the car to MWS in Slough and they rebalanced the wheels illiminating the shake. They explained that they put weights on both sides of the rim, inner and outer which gave better balance than the specialist who had put all weight on inside to leave the visual appearance of the wheels pure. Hope this helps. By the way I was told that MWS wheels are made in India where Dunlop sent their wire wheel business years ago. I highly recommend MWS. Best Regards Tom
Lee Dutton
Roger, I like the sound of your jig and plan on making one up as I have the parts, just one thing, maybe a silly question, but what holds the splined adaptor on the balance machine? Lee
EdwinTiben
Guy, I have a trshop set on my tr2 since 2004 without any problems, covering quite a few miles. No sign of wear, though im not really an offroader Cheers, Edwin

Jersey Royal
PS Guy Why does a guy with the name Harald have a Scottish flag on his car? Tom ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Tom, Good to know Mws balanced your wheel properly. I know Harald lives in Germany, and has recently been on tour with friend to Scotland Heres his member profille http://www.tr-register.co.uk/forums/index.php?/user/5344-harald/ Havent seen him on the forum recently Cheers Guy Edited February 18, 2013 by Jersey Royal
Andrew Smith
Guy, A tip if you go for wires: coat the inner hub spoke ends/surface with rubberised roofing/guttering sealant (I used Sikaflex Bond & Seal) as this prevents the grease/oil/road grim from being spat down the spokes and onto the rims with the centrifugal force of the wheels - they are a pain to clean without that too! Cheers Andrew

Graeme Robinson
I bought a set of wire wheels from TR Shop recently and was very pleased with the quality. Does anyone have any thouhts/ideas regarding tyre choice; the tyres on the wheels that came with the car are Michelin 165 SR15 ZX. i like the tread paatern and Longstone do a similar tyre but are quite expensive. One of the on-line companies have offered me a Continental CT22 which looks ok at £70 each fitted but I'm not convinced that they will look ok on the car. Any ideas? Menno van Rij
PS Guy Why does a guy with the name Harald have a Scottish flag on his car? Tom Mmm some TRs overhere have the same flag even with Ecurie Ecosse... Back to the wheels: I think that centre locked Minilites look fantastic. Since you already have the splines, things will not a little less expensive. Black Minilite spokes with the shiny center lock will look great! Graeme Robinson
They look really good Andrew, what are they like on the road? I'm keeping with the original steering on the car as opposed to changing to the rack & pinnion and was wondering if the modern profile may make the steering overly heavy?
Rodbr
Hi Guy, MWS Chrome wires fitted XAS, combination made in heaven but an expensive option. The price is the same as Longstones price for 165 x 15. The guy that fitted mine for me was surprised that when fitted properly at least one needed no balance weights at all. The others needed minimal balance weights which he fitted on the inside. You should specify using the correct Michelin tubes though and also do the sealing mode with sikaflex really does save heartache cleaning. wires. I would bite their arm off at the sleeve with offered price. Rgds Rod

Graeme, they are great - hold the road well without too much sidewall flex, are comfortable given I have stiffer front and rear springs fitted and give me more confidence in the wet. Edit: TuRK still has Worm & Peg. Hope that helps. Cheers Andrew Edited February 19, 2013 by Andrew Smith
