New Door Hinges

Recommended Posts

Are the new door hinges supplied by Moss/Rimmer fit for purpose? Mine are very badly worn and need more work than just changing the pin.

Hi Dan,

they appear to be OK. I've fitted them to my TR4 and all line up etc. You may find that you will get them at a better price on Ebay.

TR Shop were selling Bastuck ones which are very good. Or you could repin yours. Valve stems work well ;)

The worn original hinges can be repaired,a run of weld around the exposed end of the pins, heat the seized centre section to cherry red with oxy acetylene, then with pliers quench the hinge in a container of old engine oil.Place the hinge in a vice and with a few taps with a hammer, the hinge will be freed and as good as new.

Thanks for the replies. Hinges need more work than replacing pins. They need to be drilled out for larger pins and I would prefer to replace with new, unless the available new hinges are not fit for purpose.

As stated, new hinges are good. When I took the TR4 apart I found a previous owner had used large round nails for the centre pin - still had the flat head on.

our new door hinges dont fit properley. They had to be cut/ rewelded before they would let the door line up properley. Consequently- paint had been chipped & this has had to be redone too- on both sides. They have been a real "pain" With the new door cards - it was a job to shut the passenger door at all- all down to these new hinges

I bored mine out, fitted bronze sleeves and made stainless pins.

It does not stop there. The holes in the other half wear oval. These need bushes also.

This is tricky work and you want to try to find some that will work.
