tr4-thomas
Hi folks, i want to rebuild the h6 su carbs of my tr4. i have two rebuild kits (about 80 pieces,a nice puzzle for a long winter evening) and also a servicing and tuning guide. and here are the questions: 1. the guide says that the throttle stop and the stop lever are held in place with taper pins, so what do i need to get them out, a drill, a sledgehammer? also there are no holes in the new throttle spindle, what drill do i need and how deep is the new hole? (mind the carbs are still in place so i can't see any holes or taper pins jet) 2. i think only the spindle is worn, not the body (maby i'm naiv), so is it ok only to replace the spindles or is it better to bore out the bodys and fit new bushes ? 3. what is the correct needle for my carbs? any help would be greatly appreciated sorry for my rusty english regards, thomas from germany
Dale Moore
Hi Thomas Looks like no one wants to give advise on the precise art of carburettor rebuilding The throttle stop taper pins should tap out ( I think in the direction of the engine with the carbs mounted) with a small pin punch, 2 mm or so You say the throttle shaft has no holes in it? I assume the threaded holes are in place for the butterfly? The throttle assembly need to be rebuilt with the throttle stop correctly positioned before drilling through the shaft with a pilot drill before taper reaming to suit the pin, the pin is probably 3/32, although I've not got one to hand to measure. If the bushes are worn I would send the lot to a carburettor specialist, as body reboring is not a job for diy!! Moss list the SM needle (AUD1328) as srandard for the Tr4 Regards Dale
Nigel Lay
Further to Dale,s excellent advice I would just add there is nothing to be afraid of rebuilding SU's. Just be methodical. There is a site on the web that gives rebuild procedure I will try and find it. One thing is important, do not use anything abrasive to clean the soot off the chamber & piston assy. I find plain meths. is the best. Regards, Nigel (TS952)
