Wet underlay.

Recommended Posts

Just made a horrific discovery.

The underlay is soaking wet, not the carpets just the underlay,

And I cannot find where it is coming from,

all the interior is bone dry, floor plugs are in place,

I have not driven in the rain for ages,

but I have had it in the open lately, is is June after all,

so it has been out in the rain,

obviously a leak some where, but where,

any ideas please?

Blimey, where to start.

The forward edge of the door windows can leak (water form the windscreen) around the 'A' post then down onto the floor.

Heater matrix or pipes leaking.

Door seals ill-fitting.

Open screw holes on the front bulkhead dripping near ones feet.

Windscreen seal.

The underlay will always be wet long after any soaking of the carpets

Bulkhead plenum especially around where the drain tubes are (or should be ;) )

I know it isn't the answer to your question but I wonder how many TRs have been killed over the years by wet underlay!

In my experience it is impossible to keep wet out of a convertible so I don't bother trying. I junked the underlay years ago and fitted removable rubber matting to tone down drumming. I also made the floor carpet easy to remove by cutting it round the seat runners but to be honest, I seldom bother having the carpet in the car much anyway.

I had a similar but apparently less severe problem a couple of years ago after having a new windscreen fitted. It turned out to be the seal. I suffered major soaking of the felt last weekend as the result of having to negotiate floods on the way home from the RAF Leeming Families Day. I could hear the water lapping against the floor and it came in along parts of the joint between the transmission tunnel and the floor. Guess what I'm doing now!

My underlay also gets wet, it leaks in round the wiper spindle.

Can i suggest that you lay with your head under the dash with a good torch, then get someone to hose your car with water.

Thanks all,

I have removed the underlay, its in the bin.

Dryed the floor, and will get the garden hose out next.

The perculiar thing is the felt on the bulkhead was dry,

the carpets on either side of the foot wells is also bone dry,

floor from the front of the seats back are also bone dry?

Thanks again.

In that case check sealant around front edge of the floors to toe boards.

I concur with Stuart. It' s surface water thrown against the splash plate and getting past it through a crack.

Well, after all that I am back to square one.

Or square 1/2, after getting everything bone dry,

I went to The Lytham Hall Classic Car Show on Sunday,

And guess what?

whilst walking around drooling at all the wonderful cars and bikes on display,

the good old english weather did what she is best at,

yes, the heavens opened and it absolutely tipped it down,

it was pointless trying to keep dry,

I was absolutely soaked to the skin,

I was so sorry for the exhibiters, who were not by there cars when it happened,

most were, and got there hoods up or did something, but alot were not,

and I saw many soden interiors,

so I went back to the 6, waited for the mass exodus,

to disappear, then had a soggy, but enjoyable drive home, but thinking all the time;

the floor is going to be wet, the floor is going to be wet, the floor is going to be wet,

the floor is going to be wet, well, be suprised Gentleman, be very suprised, Floor? bone dry!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My dry store for her is a little way away,

So, if I think I want to abuse her soon,

I just pull her into the garden, out in the fresh air.

It has rained very heavily here over the last 48 hours,

massive biblical proportion downpours,

went out today, opened her up, water in the footwells?

So the challenge is;

Can you drive in the pouring rain,

and not get wet legs and feet, or floor, mores the point.

But park it, in the rain, and water gets in?

How? Kemo Sabbe.

It does not make sense to my poor little brain.

I would have thought the opposite to be the case?

Aaaaaaaaaaaagrgh.

Nurse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes mine seems to stay dry when driving it in the rain, but gets a very wet set of capets if you leave it out in the rain - mild drizzle (mizzle!) seems to be the worst. Now if it's likely to be parked in the rain, I use a small cover - a car cap - purchased through the TR Register shop.

Seems to do the trick.

I've discovered small pinholes in my floor pan!

While working under my car, and leaving my lead lamp clipped to the steering wheel, I could see the light through the pinholes!

my tr used to leak through the joints each side of the rear quarter deck, there is a large blob of filler on the under side, water would run down behind trim over rear wheel arch and soak the under felt. Hope that helps.

That's why TR3A had rubber floor mats as standard.

For my money it was a backward step fitting floor mats and underlay in our leak prone convertible cars... unless you like the smell of rotting cabbage.

Cheers

That's what you would expect,

I my case I think that underlay was wet for a very long time,

And yet when ever I got in her the only aroma was of old vinyl interior,

you know that smell you remember about cars when you were a kid.

Drove in the rain last Friday!!!!!!!!!!

floor? bone dry, I am just not going to worry about it anymore,

until the seat falls out of the bottom of the car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Cheers,

Think I will go along and say hello the the Red Rose set tomorrow night.

Well blow me,

I could have swore I had seen somewhere there was,

I have had it the diary for ages!

must have been another senior moment,

unfortunatly I cannot do Antrobus,

we usualy drive past The Crofters in Garstang most Friday nights,

You may or may not remember me calling in a couple of years ago with my better half in her Silver MX5,

I will never forget, I had just done the deal to buy "Trixie" my TR6,

but had not yet picked her up,

and blow me we are on the A6 heading off for the weekend and I spot row upon row of TR's in the car park,

so we nipped in,

and had a good look and a chat,

I have been to Antrobus once,

when the other half was away somewhere,

as usualy Sundays is a no go area for me.

Regards,

Juice.
