oil filter socket

Pink,its normally a Large Nut with something like a Bike Chain attached it,you put this around the filter with a Socket and Ratchet on it,the Chain tightens around the Filter and off it comes,the Nut size is around 18mm.

Your local Motor Factors should have one or try Halfrauds.

Hi Pink,

 

It's worth changing to a spin-on conversion for all the reasons you've stated above. Then you can fit one of the K&N performance filters which I use on VUX - they have a 1” AF nut moulded onto the canister and makes getting it on/off a doddle, see: http://www.moss-euro...770&SortOrder=2

i have the spin of conversion Andrew, like the idea of that type of canister with the nut on the bottom. very expensive though

Pink that doesnt fit all of the filters and some of them have hardly any fluting on the bottom. The claw type tool is a better bet.

I've used the pliers type on various spin on canister oil filters and found it very easy to use. Mine is a bit like a pair of slip joint pliers with the jaws curved to fit the oil filter. When I've fitted oil filters, I always oil the rubber gasket ring thing and tighten the filter by hand, as tight as I can get it. Not sure if they should really be tighter, but not had a leak this way and never had problems removing them.

i have broke the rubber type, broke the metal strap type,

 

always put oil on them maybe i am doing them up to tight

dont know your own strength. I have the 'rubber band' bought cheap probably 10+ years ago. Always worked on TR's, Ferraris, Saab, VW , Ford.....anyways hopefully youre sorted.

I use an adjustable bike chain type filter remover with a handle attached to it. Came free with Practical Motorist magazine in about 1967 when I got my first Mini Van and been using it ever since.

Being a Yorkshireman, especially a Yorkshireman with a Scottish name, and consequently having a reputation for frugality (insert thrift, economy, meaness, tightness, etc,as required here) the lure of a free piece of Garage equipment to bolster my then sparse tool kit was sufficient to seduce me into buying the magazine. The fact that it has lasted this long is a testament to British Engineering or more probably Taiwanese sweat shop labour and yes Neil, I do change the oil more often that once every two years.

Just spotted this post... For many years I used an old leather belt to 'choke' the filter - idea inherited from my Old Man... Worked a treat! However, with no 'old' leather belts available I have now resorted to the fabric style strap wrench...
