Best oil to use

Recommended Posts

Hi Dave,

the 'net is full of folks who mean well but who know sod all about sod all. I'm no expert, but I have been driving 7s and 8s since before the 7 was even on sale in the UK, I have learnt the odd bit along the way.

Any decent 20w/50 will suffice for the engine - I prefer Silkolene, Comma and Motul are also good, but it's not necessary to pay more than £15/gallon. If needs must, the slant 4 isn't too fussy, anything from 15w/40 to 20w/60 will do the job.

Diff spec was originally EP90, any decent 75/90 or 80/90 will also do, it's not critical.

Gearbox is another matter, the 5-speeder was notorious for failures, no wonder running on ATF. Ken Tomlinson, the transmission man for the works Wedges, knew more about TR transmissions than everyone else put together. Motul 300 gear oil was his sole recommendation, except for the more expensive Motul version for competition only. 300 will do equally well in the diff.

Cheers,

Alec

Afterthought Dave, sensible places to buy oil. The average classic specialist wants an arm and a leg for some overpriced jollop in a fancy tin bearing a fancy name and boasting lots of high flown verbiage. Lubricant specialists tend to be more realistic.

Even better if you can club together with a buddy or three and buy a box of 4 rather than an odd can . . . .

Cheers,

Alec

Hi Alec

So whats the way forward if ATF is already in the box - is it necessary to drain and refill with a couple of hours running, and then drain and re-fill again for long term use? or as ATF is so thin there will be little to worry about - just drain and re-fill.
