Searching for your thoughts/advice ,the FIA inspectors are insisting that i fit a low port head and standard cast manifold on my TR2 so what are my options regarding the exhaust systems that fit to this manifold.

There is this one. Exhaust it has one silencer so a bit easier to fit but depends on their noise limit possibly. The other option is get Double S at Collumpton to make you one to suit the car, probably not that much more expensive and will be a perfect fit. Derrington and SAH used to do four branch for low port heads so I would have thought they were homologated but where you would find an original I dont know.

Hi Roy,

homologation didn't exist as such for the TR2 - what matters to the FIA generally is proof that a particular item was used in period. Vic Derrington was involved with the TR2 almost from initial production, and as a gas flow specialist manifolds would have been the first items on the agenda, courtesy of TDC.

Neil Revington would probably know better than most what was used in period, especially after his Classic Le Mans exercise with that TR2.

Derrington had available a 4-branch manifold for the Swallow Doretti, the demise of which occurred before the end of TR2 production . . . . in the 70s my old Doretti was still running on its original Derrington manifold, on its original engine rebuilt by Sid Hurrell, SAH..

Cheers,

Alec

what is in the homologation papers is the be all and end all here, you may remember the struggle we had with the inner wings being modified to alow the carbs to breath easier. We found photos from the period but this was not enough without written proof. The message is the same here , we know that they were probably used but they are not in the homologation papers so NO must be cast standard manifolds. Will be meeting the inspector again this weekend to get more clarification on some other issues. It is harder now to get papers than in previous years, and those with papers already that have the goodies fitted will struggle when they come up for renewal.Until then they are the lucky ones.

Hi Roy,

but just what 'homologation papers' are you referring to ?

To the best of my knowledge FIA homologation records date back to 1960, the first Standard Triumphs being the Vanguard 6 and various Heralds, TR4 the first TR that was FIA homologated.

Earlier cars used to be mainly reliant on a discussion between the individual applicant and the ASN, with potential appeal to the FIA historic technical committee (or whatever it's called nowadays) if the applicant and ASN couldn't agree. Another potential advantage to Frogmobiles, of course.

Cheers,

Alec

Roy - all this begs the question 'Do you want FIA papers if its such an unreasonably onerous process ?' ....

I had my TR4 rally car inspected for papers and the inspector picked up 6 different issues, all but one I think are ludicrous. Ive no problem with the inspector doing his job, nor indeed the comments made (like the dish in the inner wing etc.) but the feedback I had was that there is some guy in Paris making all this grief and giving out to the people here in the UK by return if he sees something he doesnt like in the pictures, not that there is any great benefit to any particular mod on our cars in comparison to the magnesium engine block or all aluminium e type brigade.

Im in a position where I can get around the need for FIA papers or just wont do the events that require them, and it seems to be that this is a solution that others are increasingly taking in relation to FIA events. Im sure the racing world is a bit more FIA dependent, but for us it seems that the 'cash can solve the problem' attitude still prevails - Im sure you will see that if you have to have a low port cast exhaust manifold manufactured.

Ho hum. Ill have a look in my shed and see what I have for a low port.

Regards

Tony

Tony i ask myself that same question many many times.

Have given up several times but the lure of the big events keeps returning and then there is always the fact that if the time comes to sell the car one with fia papers commands a far greater price .I know your feeling re the list as i had my 3 inspected prior to photos being taken and told that i could make a late entry into a race the following weekend where the final papers would be agreed. After practice in parc ferme there was interest in the car and this resulted in a full page of things to change, yes i gave up but that was 2 years ago.

Alec i will find out their reference for a 2 and 3 but i do beleave that homologation papers exist , the inspector has a 2 with claimed history so that dosn't help .

There are no listed FIA homologation papers for TR2 or TR3 if you want HTP papers I have been told to present an absolutely standard production car and papers can then be issued.

What a laugh, when some of the original Le Mans cars had fibre glass bodies, discs front and rear, twin cam  heads on the engines and many other things; they were allowed to race by the grace of the FIA in the worlds most prestigious sports car race. As it stands at the moment if you turn up for an HTP inspection with a ex Le Mans car you shouldn't be able to get FIA papers or HTP on that vehicle, yet they do! So, those of us that wish to race our TR2's and 3's in meetings and other races that demand HTP papers, can't. Oh I forgot, if you are French or Belgian and you turn up at a Spa for the 3 hour race or the Le Mans Classic, you can have HTP papers and you can enter! Being British and our Inspectors toeing the line, means we can't have HTP papers for a race car with any modifications away from Factory Standard issue, so we can't compete at the same level, all we are allowed to do is shuffle around in our bog standard cars even if we do present to the HTP inspectors period documents showing that TR2 and 3 vehicles were produced at the factory with different chassis, rack and pinion steering, disc brakes fore and aft, Weber Carburetors, larger fuel tanks, modified radiators etc etc ,.,. we will still not get our papers to enable us to race. Or is there a way through? I have just noticed a Dutch TR3 with HTP sitting on Minilites with a reference to the fact that it has fibre glass panels and rack and pinion steering! Maybe we should take our cars to Holland to get them HTP'd.

Not happy
