MVC 575

Whilst reading the various posts and following this thread with interest, I request certain individuals need to 'take stock' and remember that this is a forum for the benefit of members (and in some case non-members) to appreciate the marque.

I would also suggest it is not the place to 'slag off' persons views or queries - if these certain individuals wish to embark on such activity at least do so by PM or email where available to make the matter private. Please!

Continued 'bad feeling' or whatever it is wished to be called can only manifest itself in potential problems for this great tool that numerous people maintain and contribute readily - and for free.

Being human, (I hope!) I too may disagree with certain things, but certainly do not wish to resort to any kind of 'bun fight'/'handbags at dawn' etc. Life is too short!

Thank you!

Best regards

Hi Ian,

I have to say that I disagree with you in part as it amounts to sensorship. To do this is a bit insulting to the huge number of people that read and contribute to the forum. By taking controversial discussion off forum it allows the initial statements to be made without challenge and so perpetuates the myth.

We are all grown ups on here and as such responsible for our actions. If you take the Grahem Robson remarks, whoever he his, in context it can only be seen as provocative, flipent in the extreme and the information could so easily have been imparted in a different way. Afterall this couldn't be the renowned Graham Robson, author and TR expert who offers to bare his ass to the general public, could it?

I would defend anyone that was being was being put open for whatever reason as I would hope we all would and equally defend my own corner vigourously. In my view you should never say anything behind someone's back that you aren't prepared to say to their face, and never kick someone who is on the ground as they tend to come back at you with a baseball bat when you least expect it.

To take discussion to a private email or PM denies the rest of us the opportunity of making up our own mind using all the information available to us and thus purpetuates the status quo.

Mention was made of the restoration of TS 2 and I am sure we would all welcome a full account of how it was found, subsequently restored, and the accounts so we can all see what the potential for ruin we face when rebuilding our own cars.

I stand to be corrected but the following quotation comes from the TR enterprizes website.

"In April 1997, Keith very generously donated the car, a vehicle of great historical importance, to the TR Register on condition that the club restores the car to original condition, which project is now being under taken in conjunction with TR Enterprises." quotation comes from the TR enterprizes website.

I would in all innocense ask the following,

Does this mean that we as club members own it?

How is it used?

How is it funded?

How is it maintained?

Sure it may cause amusement to some, but to others it is a source of information. Arguement keeps things alive and fresh. If we never challenge anything we never grow.

I for one do feel life is too short for petty squables but we all need to remember everyone has to have the right of reply or someone to do it for them, or the bullies win.

I have only contributed once to this thread, making a totally factual comment about MVC 575 and its owner, all based on personal experience, not on hearsay, rumour or innuendo.

Why then is Rodbro being so rude about me, accusing me of being provocative and flippant in the extreme ? Everyone who knows me (hello to my many acquaintances in the Register) will realise that the comment about stripping off, and licking a restored MVC 575 was an attempt to lighten the tone of what was (and remains) an extremely po-faced thread.

Rodbro is, similarly, ill-informed about the current status of TS2, but I will leave it to other knowledgeable Register enthusiasts to tell him more ....

TS2:the club owns two TRs, TS2 (which was a gift on the understanding that the car would be restored properly, which it was at very little cost to the club) and the Coca-Cola/Levi TR7, which was a recent purchase.

Both are used as publicity vehicles, and are seen at numerous shows throughout the year, attracting very considerable interest.

A couple of years ago, TS2 made a tour of the UK, visiting every Local Group and being driven by numerous members of the club - again, this stimulated a great deal of interest within the club and also in the media in the regions of the country.

The club pays the cost of maintenance, repairs, MOTs, insurance etc, but it is considered that the publicity value at least equals the costs involved.

There have been articles in TR Action describing all this in much more detail, with the TR7 featuring on the cover and on pages 15 and 40-41 of TR Action 238 (October 2009).

As Chairman Chris Cunnington explained on page 15 of TR Action 238, if the Committee considered that the TR7 were no longer earning its keep in publicity, then it would be sold and it is highly unlikely that there would be any overall loss in such a transaction.

However, the benefits of having two TRs which span the history of the marque cannot be under-estimated - I have seen this for myself at a number of shows and events. It is vital for the future of the club that we attract new members, and these two cars are, in my opinion, better than adverts in the classic car press (useful as those are, of course).

Perhaps the level of blame should be directed at the previous owner who by Mr Robson's

own account had the "basket case" in the 70's when it was just as iconic as it is now,

but then again people have more disposable income to throw around now.

Graham Hallett, the PO, rescued the car when it was about to be scrapped.

He drove it in 'as found' state, the way TRs are meant to be driven, while

he collected the parts for a full restoration He had already done research

and was planning the restoration in detail, such as identifying parts that

were the same as production or special to MVC, what original panels could

be salvagaed and repaired and what could not. Retaining every single piece

of the original car was a priority.

There really wasn't anything like the same interest in TRs then, even the

Jabbeke car. Certainly not 'iconic' at the time.

Graham certainly saved the car and, when he came to sell it, it's availablilty

was made know to a limited number of people, I think. Then it was advertised.

£1000 was the asking price, and I could certainly have bought it for that.

But - the cost and commitment of restoration was beyond my financial means

at the time.

To put that £1000 into a perspective of the time . . . it might have bought you a mint TR6

coming up for its first MoT, or a good TR3A and a good Swallow Doretti. Serious money.

To add to the perspective, times were very different back then.

There just wasn't a restoration culture then as there is now,

very few parts, no specialists and although there was obviously

some interest in factory cars, nothing like it is now.

James,

I really should keep my mouth shut as I don't even own a Triumph, but I fear that you have found out the hard way the nature of all of these forums. There is the good and the bad. You were bitten by the 'old guard'. I personally do not care when you joined as I'm sure there is not a seniority clause. Your posts were all polite and should have been treated with more respect by some. Please don't let any of this detract from your hobby. Focus on the machinery, not the people. People and British cars will always let you down, but you can fix British cars. Take care, Fred Winterburn, Canada

Exuse me sir. If you really dont mind, i was just asking the history of this triumph. I like learning about this topic because it interests me. I respect

Graham's privacy as well as yours. Yes, I have learned many interesting things on this forum and I don't think I was asking to much. I guess personalities are different over here in The States. Whats the point of having an historical Triumph? Well it's your choice, but I think its nice to share the history of them. I'm not trying to start an argument here, but I have learned from you that it is not my affair with Graham. Now i want you to learn something. Dont take things so seroiusly in life. Life is too short, enjoy it and share it. I never meant for this little thing to change your decision. Heck! I say have fun with your Triumph no matter what anyone says.

Best Regards James

Ian, thanks for the poop! I did not know that WE own TS2! I sure hope that she can do a tour on THIS SIDE of the pond before I kick the bucket! TS1L is in Hawaii. It would be nice to be in the presence of TS2, even better to sit it her! 'Til then, ...

George

P.S. We are coming up in the world! I pulled into the ATM yesterday, and a guy in a BMW sedan with fancy wheels asked me if my car was an Austin Healey. I have been asked 100 times if I am an MG, but never a Healey.
