inertia starter pinion replacement.

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Has anyone removed the pinion on the old type inertia/bendix starters?

I've got a new one to fit on our 2000 MK1 but the spring which holds the circlip in looks a bit HD.

Is a special tool needed? or does someone have an ingenious method without inflicting a hernia.

Cheers

Darren

You need a Bendix Spring Compressor to do the job.

As you have already guessed .... a finger and thumb....won't do it !!

The tool is basically two plaes, very thick metal, two threaded bolts and nuts. The lower plate has a cut out to go around the shaft.

Tighten up, to release the pressure, remove circlip and loosen equally, both sides.

An easy job with the right tool..either purchase or stroll down to the friendly local garage and see if you can borrow one

( or do it there on site ).

Anyone in your local group got one, that they can lend you ?

PM me if you have no joy locally.

When I had my MG Midget, I made up a compressor as shown.

I was able to hook the circlip out and release the spring.

About an hour searching for bits to make the compressor

and 30 seconds to change the bendix.

Hi Darren

Its the thrill of the challenge!

Like when I had to gather scrap bits together in order to pull the cylinder liners.

One gets such a buzz when one succeeds against adversity.
