You still need to check your end float asap,as that is what was causing the contact with the plate! Catch it now before it gets any worse and the block is ruined! As someone has already suggested, the return edge on the bottom of the cover plate should face forwards on the car i.e. towards the engine. If you have it the wrong way around you get scraping on the cover from the flywheel as shown on the attached photograph. The cause of the problem was actually identified by my Northumbria group leader, John Scarr on one of his visits to help me with my gearbox problems. He can have my beer if he comes to Australia.
