Power Steering

Recommended Posts

Hi Alex

Both Vic Benson and Harry Dent of the North London Group have recently had power steering fitted to their TR5s and very impressive it is too.

Vic had his fitted by a specialist and Harry bought and fitted his himself.

I will contact them to pass on any info.

Regards

Lee

Following on from Lee's note, I drove Harry's 5 back from Knebworth, fantastic, no bump steer (fitted with a damper) and perfectly weighted at speed. However, it the parking that is a revelation, SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO easy

Trouble is the kit has been engineered for wimpy 6 pot owners (5&6s) and won't fit a four pot. Designer obviously though TR4 drivers were 'real men'

If enough of us poor people want one maybe he'll re-design ? B)

Hi there, I have a lady friend who drives a TR6 and struggles with the steering - do you know where I could get details for how to fit power steering to the TR6? :)

From the International programme, these are the details of the fellow who displayed his kit at Malvern (I refer, of course, to his Power Steering kit!) and is, I believe, the supplier of the conversion which Harry Dent and Vic Benson have fitted:

email: jomarpas@hotmail.co.uk

Tel: 07812 766789

Address: 5 Simpson Road, Shipston-on-Stour, Warks, CV36 4JT

I had a good look at this conversion at the Triumph Show earlier in the year and was impressed with the way it had been engineered, and the fact that Harry fitted it himself is testimony to this. This kit uses a hydraulic pump, which is driven by an extra belt, and the cross bar is replaced with a differently shaped version to create the extra space required. From what I saw, everything is included in the kit.

I would not do it to a TR5 or TR6 if I had one, because I would want to show that although older than Harry, even a small fellow like me can still turn the wheel of a TR without artificial aids! I have even heard Harry muttering about electric window winders - what next? Electric Hood erection? Fans of Joe Lucas, Prince of Darkness, would be having a fit - yet more things to overload the electrics and go wrong!

Have a look at THIS

Menno

Looks very neat and in theory more attractive than hydraulics, esp as it doesn't seem to require any chassis mods. Anyone fitted one?

Hi Folks,

considering the demographics of the TRR the age level is higher than it aught to be.

This can bring sudden medical problems to the fore - tennis elbow, frozen shoulders, dicky ticker etc.

To enable our aging membership to keep these lumps going the odd mod or two shouldn't go begging if the alternative is to change to an MX5 etc.

Quite a few TR2/3 have change to rack and pinnion steering, there are plenty of brake servo's as non-original. There are even some TR's with servo assisted clutch.

So what is wrong with power steering if it keeps the car going a little longer with the present owner and a member retaining TR membership.

As an aside it may even make the cars more attractive to our younger generation and future members.

Go for it mod-away, Triumph would have done it.

Why not try getting fit instead ?

Cheers,

Ho, Alec, That's one way of looking at it.

I didn't say i wanted one, jsut that an electric one would be better than hydraulic. One of the attrctions to me of my'4 is the directness of everything, my Eurobox is power autoamatic everything, which is very nice for day to day commuting and very long drives/traffic, but also smothers everything out of driving.

On the other hand... I would like a smaller steering wheel though, as this would reduce the zig at the wheel and then the zag around the handbrake for my left leg. Still there are many things I need to spend on before I get ound to power steering so its just a slightly whistful day dream just now.

EPAS is a relatively easy fit to a restoration in progress car. But problematic as a retrofit due to lack of working space and fitment of the top outer column.

The hydraulic R&P unit would require the front cross bar on the TR4 to be modified. Although an electric pump can be fitted.
