4A Dashboard

Recommended Posts

Hi Everybody-does anyone out there know what the original veneer on a '67 4A would be?

Mine is in good sound condition & I don't particularly want to remove it unnecessarily,

but my doortop trims are in poor condition & I intend to make new veneered ones to match the dash.

There are a number of veneers that would do, but it would be nice to get an exact match

Hi TIA-Richard

My TR4A was first registered in 1967 and appears to have a 'teak' veneer dash. (I have replaced the dash with Burr Walnut, but I still have the original. My door cappings were black vinyl, but I am replacing these with burr walnut to match the dash.

Regards

Tony

TIA-Richard,

According to Bill Piggott's book "Original Triumph TR", Copyright 1991 by Bay View Books Ltd, page 93 "...the one-piece dashboard (TR4A) was now in polished walnut veneer...". I own a 1966 TR4A, CT-65074-L, built 25 January 1966. The dashboard veneer is indeed walnut but not stained as dark as newer replacement boards. Original 4A dashboards were lighter in color than currently seen on many restored cars with new or refinished dashes. Piggott's books with their fine photographs are a good source for determining originality.

I believe all dashboards are Walnut, but come in 3 different shades. Originals are American Walnut, which is quite light with few knots. Burr Walnut is a keen replacement, but not original. It is darker with lots of knots and grain showing. Your other alternative is European Walnut, which is somewhere in-between.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the replies- American walnut seems to make sense. I struggled to reconcile burr & european walnut as both these have a definite brown hue even in their raw state, & quite strong grain patterns. My dash has more of an orange tint to it which would be impossible to acheive from a brown base. I will investigate american walnut veneers & report back

Thanks again

Richard

Hi everybody-On checking a specialist veneer suppliers website - www.capitalcrispin.com - I'm persuaded that the original veneer is in fact European sap walnut. It appears to be about the right colour & grain to achieve the desired finish, whereas the American walnut is much darker. I only hope they will supply in small enough quantities.

Thanks again

Richard
