Leaking water from pump area

I took the car to be MOTd this afternoon, and on the whole it did pretty well... main fail was the handbrake simply not working.. but thats a problem for another day...

 

During the test there was a constant drip of water comming from the front of the engine area somewhere around the water pump... possibly from the centre itself as quite a bit of water was flung out at high velocity...

 

After the test I went to re-start the car and it took a good 10 mins of trying to get it to run...

 

Seemed to idle fine, so I pulled out onto the main road, put my foot down and the engine just juddered and stopped.... repaet performance, only half a mile down the road in the middle of a traffic controled cross roads...Couldnt go above 20 for the remaining half mile of the trip as the engine threateneed to die if you put too much load on it...

 

Fuel seems to be ok, so I am guessing that the engine was badly overheating because of (I think) this water leak from the pump area...

 

I have removed the pump and it spins pretty freely... makes a bit of a metal on metal rubbing noise as it spins though... Is this normal? (If I give the pump a good flick around whilst I hold onto the base, it spins for about 1.5 revs before it stops.... to give you an idea of how loose it is) When I bought the car (this was its first road trip for 10 years)... The water pump was all but siezed...but seems to have loosened up a LOT!

 

I will admit to knowing nothing about these pumps... there seems to be no way of getting it appart.... I cant figure out exactly where the water was comming from..

 

 

Does anyone have any ideas? I am truly stumped on this one.... and only have 10 days to get the car back for a re-test :s

Bad luck, on what must have been a red-letter day.

 

If it was seized and is now slack, the bearings were/are rusted and the seal is shot.

New pumps are available from the usual sources, and I've seen no adverse report of them, so get your plastic out I think. There are two variants in Moss, only £40 and £60, I haven't looked into the whys, also I vaguely recall something about pulley sizes, I may be misremembering... :unsure:

Its your water pump,should spin free with slight drag no binding,very easy to change,(as you already know). dont let the engine overheat,the dist cap prob has moisture in in,blow it out after you get a new pump . cheers Greg

If you are getting metal to metal contact in the pump it's worn beyond its useful life.I'd replace it before the engine is cooked -if that happens you will have to reach for the plastic in a big way.They are a consumable item available from the major aftermarket suppliers

 

Dewatering fluid such as WD 40 should get the wet ignition going for the moment.

 

Did your temperature gauge go well towards the "H" side of the dial.If it did I'd recommend you flush out the cooling system thoroughly to remove any scale dislodged by overheating after replacing the pump ,before refilling with coolant.

Hi Tegwin.

I had exactly the same on mine as it had been laid up for a couple of years,and once i had it and during its shake down year,leaked,caused cap to get wet.

Replace it now as its easy and cheap to do. So get down to,ring you nearest supplier,specialist PDQ!!

Better that than having a rough running engine that will overheat and cook itself if you dont!! :blink:

As ivor says, about £40 ish!!

As mentioned before on the forum be carefully when buying a cheap pump, it might not last for long. Most remake pumps have seals that last for a very short time. It seems that better pumps are available these days which are fitted as the originals with a grease nipple. Maybe someone can recall an article in TRAction about the pumps and different seals ;)
