Dazzer
Hi Guys Is the play in the rear wheel bearings just perceptible to feel, when moved in or out? The workshop manual stataes 4 to 6 thou, which is virtually nothing in real terms, however both sides move what feels about 1mm when I grab them. No noise or problem with the bearings otherwise. I can take a shim out of either side, to reduce the play (three in each) but didnt want to reduce too far. Unfortunately no DTI at present. Any experience of rear wheel bearing adjustment gratefully received. Cheers Darren
Dale Moore
Hi Darren hold the hub in a large vice so as you can set up the DTI on the flange, and allow access to tighten the large, nut you need something to jam in the wheel studs, to stop the flange turning when you tightem the bearings up You can, although not recommended retighten the nut, collapsing the spacer further, until you get the 4 thou required as you say 4 thou is bearly perseptible I use the wide blade screwdriver and carefully lever inbetween the dustcover and flange Much better, if there is 1mm play as you suggest, to strip the assembly and fit new bearings and spacer, regrease and retighten properly, new locking washer is desireable Not a difficult job if you have access to the neccesary engineering equipment, but if not, exchange hubs are readily available Regards Dale
Dale Moore
Darren Just posted you instructions for IRS hub repairs!! wondered what the shims were for. Cann't help with solid axle other than I think 1 mm is still a bit exessive Regards Dale
Dazzer
Hi Dale Thank you anyway. The 2000 Mk1 has the IRS, so all useful information for the future. Many thanks Darren
Rhodri
Hi Darren, I set up my hub play after I had new bearings fitted. I used a dial gauge on a magnetic stand and I think this is the only way really, although at one stage I contemplated using feeler gauges. If you search the internet you can get them cheaply It was a bit of trial and error as some shims were not available, so I ended up with 2 shims on one side and 3 on the other, which gave me 6thous. One of the TR specialists said that 10 thous is OK, so there seems to be a reasonably large range. I should think that your pull it and guess method may not be accurate enough, and 1mm = 40 thous http://www.chronos.ltd.uk/acatalog/Chronos...c_Bases_73.html An example above.
