The Great Wheel debate

Recommended Posts

Hi John and Roger

Just wanted to make the point that not all wire wheels are ****. Borranis I am familiar with. I have (Indian) MWS chrome wires on my six. They look nice but are a blighter to clean and it's a constant battle to keep rust a bay (one that I'm losing) especially with all the salt on our roads. I am seriously considering centre laced (easier to clean) stainless wires. But they are around £320 each from MWS. The only alternative I can find, as Borranis are totally out of the question on price alone, is Turrino wires, and they are nearly double the price of stainless wires.

I'll probably end up with Revolution 4 spoke split rim alloys! The black spokes will go nicely with a yellow car, in my opinion that is!

Cheers

Tony

PS How's the car going John, I was very impressed with it!

Hi Tony

As you probably know I only did relatively few events last year so didn't do particularly well in Championship terms but I intend to "hit the ground running" this year.

The car is going like the clappers so let's hope I don't get any mechanical maladies. I intend doing the following events so if your interested come along and say hello

19th April Gurston Down

26th April Wiscombe Park

9th May Harewood

6th June Lydden

13th June Goodwood

27th June Castle Combe

19th July Gurston Down

1st August Goodwood

5th September Wiscombe Park

12th September Wiscombe Park

27th September Prescott

17th October Castle Combe

Regards

John

Hi Steve26,

There are various options for wire wheels and people will give you all sorts of advice. In the end it comes down to personal preference.

I found Motor Wheel Services in Slough (Langley) very informative. They make wire wheels so I guess they have some knowledge. They quoted me new wires at around £80 each last year. I know some people treat MWS as social pariahs, but I found them helpful, They are relatively local to me (less than 20 miles away), so convenience has a lot to do with my view. They also supply many of the specialist suppliers.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your reply and info.

After reading other comments, seems as always cheapest is not good. Especially in the case of wheels and chrome.

Guess I have to hope for part exchange with owner who is fed up with polishing.

Regards

Steve

They require adaptors - the spinner comes with a threaded sleeve but it doesn't fit the wheel center, so other adapter(s) are needed to key into the wheel center and thence into the provided sleeve. These are all held by setscrews hidden inside; sets of (3) equally spaced. I just drew them up and had them made at a local machine shop in alumin(i)um ;)

It would be a decent little enterprise to offer these conversion kits on ebay if the source for the spinners were known - I got mine from a gent in the UK on ebay, but they had a little " Made in Taiwan " sticker on them :P

So Tom, these are apparently not standard wire wheel spinners then but were what ?, a decorative spinner made just for this purpose or are they from some other car/wheel ?. I assume they are metal/chromed ?. Are they in fact a different size to the standard spinners ?. Does Frank have the same thing on his 250 or is that another solution ?

Stan / Tom,

The spinners and adaptors for the American Racing Equipment wheels used to be available until very recently from "Torque Thrust Terry" who is an ebay dealer and has a website at http://www.torquethrustcentral.com/. A search on his ebay store however has shown that he currently has nothing for sale. He was asking something like $50 to $60 for a set of the spinners and adaptors which was pretty good value. I did get some of the original plastic hex ones complete with the rear retainers from him a few years ago but never fitted them and fitted some later 200S aluminium ones instaed.

Can't say for sure about their intended purpose - maybe they do fit the ARE wheels  as Derek implies. They are chrome plated metal ( pot, perhaps <_< ) and are purely vestigial, and weigh precious little. They do cure a major loose end for mine as the Panasport centers are worse to my eyes than none at all ( which looks a tad serious, and you've got to have shiny grease caps in front ). As I said, I counted myself very fortunate to get a 2nd set in new condition - that was a couple of years back, not from Derek's referenced source but I think a Forum member  . Haven't seen any since

I've had some MWS wire wheels with stainless steel spokes on my DB6 for about five years. They do take a lot of cleaning, but sparkle like new when done! The service from MWS has always been very good in my experience.

My TR6 came with some four spoke American Racing wheels (for sale, see the Buy/Sell/Trade section), so there's another option!

There's some good looking cars on here. I don't think you can go far wrong with any of the wheel choices/suggestions on here.

Love the green car with the Chrome wires....think they work particularly well on dark colours.

I agree, my car came with wires, over the years I've tried them painted, stove enamelled and powder coated, but they always end up chipped and going rusty again! I pondered chrome ones, as they would be so much easier to keep clean,. But they look far too flashy on a white car, but they do look handsome on dark cars.

Well, I'll stick to my wider than 185 tyres, and FWIW, I'm not scared or a coward. I now get a little wary when a new member chooses to be a little opinionating with his first posts!

Many cheeses improve with age - forum members can too! :P

I've got 195/65 H Michelin tyres on my driver with its 6" Panasport rims. I thought these to be about ideal when I got them - same diameter as the 165-15s originally supplied with 3.45:1 axle cars ( what I have now ) and excellent grip.

Whoever Dougal is, he has posted the same basic promotion of Michelin XAS tyres on almost all posts relating to tyres, so I don't think you need worry about his being opinionated. He looks to be trying to sell a specific brand of tyre.

Though in my view his sales technique leaves a lot to be desired.

Hello Guy ..

I just have to ask .... what are the wheels on your pictured TR6 .. They look amazing ... What size are they and are they specially painted to match the car .. My favourites were always Wolfrace but these have got me thinking ,,

Thanks

Brian

I'm reviving this thread to show off my latest TR6 project. Ever since this topic started I have been looking for a way to fit some decorative spinners to the Panasports. Tom and I chatted at the TRF summer party last year where we saw a couple of examples including one with Pansports and soon after that Tom tracked down a web site that was selling chromed spinners and the matching adapters. These were not designed for the Panasports and the adapters were too small a diameter to work with the Panasport center hole so once again Tom came to the rescue with a design for a sleeve that would lock into the Panasport wheel and allow the spinner adapter to be inserted.

Having shared this desire with Rick Patton and the gang over the last couple of years at car shows Rick volunteered to make the sleeves. Rick has some fancy CNC equipment and is well known here for his other parts like the fan eliminator and the trailing arm jig.

Rick sent me a sample sleeve the other day which works perfectly and I'll be getting another three before the driving season starts.

I know some people find decorative spinners to be pointless and in poor taste but I like 'em and I especially like them better than the plastic wheel centers that came with the Panasport wheels.

Thanks Tom for all the help with this project.

Thanks for the credit, Stan :) . Actually it belongs to a 6-Pack guy ( named Boyd I think  ) who was kind enough to write the supplier's name down for me at the Trials 2010.

Fine looking job if I say so myself :P

Keep in mind you'll have to remove them sleeve and all when you get tyres mounted or even balanced <_<

I just gotta put my 2 cents in here and say that the stock TR6 wheels are hideous. Wire wheels look nice (but I think less spokes look better) and panasports are the best looking and what should have been stock in my opinion.

I may be a little bias on the panasports cause I just bought a set of 17x8.5 that I am going to put on as soon as I get the extra cash to put the rubber around them.

I apologize to anyone I offend, but the stock wheels remind of of the kind of rim that someone would put hubcaps over, or the kind of rim that is put on a spare tire. Definitely an afterthought when designing the TR6.

The original wheels and Michelin XAS tyres are ok for me:

With the exception of removal of the chrome sill strip (rust trap...) still in original condition.

OK well not quite - Bosch fuel pump and electronic ignition.
