Hello Everyone.

Just thought I would post a message as a new TR4A owner.

Just purchased a 1967 TR4 IRS after many years of being a Lotus owner (should I have owned up to this) so please be prepared for a series of stupid questions on everything to do with owning, maintaining & overhauling a TR.

Hello Saint,

First up I think you will have to confirm your first name, otherwise you'll probably be called Roger (as in Roger Moore).

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having been a Lotus owner - although one's credibility does increase or diminish a little depending on which model!

A warm welcome to the world of TR and I'm sure we all wish you a lot of fun with the 4A - and for God's sake do use it - they don't like being left to fester in a garage.

Really would suggest you join the Register and then visit/join one of your local Groups depending which one suits you best - assuming you have a choice. They are bound to be a great bunch of people and although the Forum is excellent for obtaining help and information, there is nothing quite like meeting fellow owners face to face.

Happy TRing

Geoff

Thanks Geoff for the welcome

The names 'Keith', in true Bond style.

Well as for the Lotus ownership I started off with a 1976 Lotus Elite then went to a 1972 Europa Twin Cam & just sold a 1997 Esprit GT3, hence the purchase of the TR.

I have a few jobs to do on the car but hopefully I can pick these up but still be able to drive it on a regular basis, I'm with you I hate seeing a classic car sitting in the garage, with these great looking cars they need to be driven.

Time spent now overhauling parts will hopefully give me years of trouble free enjoyment. So on that point, for an engine overhaul, is it something that needs to be done by a garage/specialist or is it something I could tackle (Engineer for the past 30 years)

Just sent off for the TR register mag so hope to be joining very soon.

Keith,

The TR is a simple beast and a competent engineer can tackle an overhaul, with only certain jobs being undertaken by specialists (crank re-grinding, for example). Remember that it is a wet-linered engine, and one should clamp the liners in position when the head is removed (else rotating the crank could break the bottom, figure-of-8, seal - that said the liners can prove an absolute sod when you try to remove them!). Reproductions of the Workshop Manual are available and then there's Roger Williams' book "How to Improve Your Triumph TR2-4A" - both available from the TR Register's on-line shop.

Your local group will have many people willing to proffer advice, this Forum is marvellous for fast & helpful responses, and then there's the Technical Team via the magazine.

Best wishes for many years of enjoyable TR motoring,

Ian Cornish

P.S. Having been driven round the Nurburgring in a 1971 Lotus Elan Sprint, I have to say that Colin Chapman was a genius! Sometimes his cars were fragile (can't say that of TRs!), but boy do they perform!

Thanks Ian for the information.

I thinkl I will have a good read up before attempting the engine overhaul.

Yes you are so right, Chapman was a complete genius the handling of his car's is something else. Driving the Esprit was just like it was on a mono- rail & at high speed it would never budge even on the tightest of corners, obviously you needed a good tyres on all four corners.

I'm just as excited about driving the TR & I'm due to pick it up next Wedneday, so can't wait to see how thr car performs.

Thanks again

Hi Saint, why not do the saintly thing first & join the Register; discover your local group & go along, the group leader will always welcome new faces.

I've had a 4A for many years, I also have a 6; both full restoration projects.

You've certainly chosen the best time of year to become a proud owner, the list of activities seems endless. Ask as many questions as you like, someone will always have an answer.

I'm sure you will find the TR exciting, but in a slightly different way to any Lotus

Take it easy and learn to drive in a completely different way. Bon chance

Hi St Keith,

Yep - welcome to TR ownership, it's different to Hethel ..........believe me ! I'm sure you'll find great TR enjoyment - you've got the villages along the quiet North West Norfolk coastal roads at no big distance for you from Norwich - Maybe our 4A's will see each other one sunny day - hardly ever see another one around here. !!

My experience is that the forum is a really useful info exchange, so use it !!

Mike.

Hello Keith, Welcome to the Forum and shortly the TR Register. You'll find they are a very friendly and helpful bunch on the Forum, and few have forgotten that they were TR novices once, even if for some it was a very long time ago, so don't be afraid to ask any questions you like. If you are an engineer of 30 yaers experience however it sound more likley that you will be able to give advice to most of us.

I'm sure you will enjoy the 4a.The TR Register International weekend is in July at Malvern so if you get chance you want to go along as it will give you a great flavour of the club , and what is available TR wise for new parts, s/h parts, upgrades, books, regalia etc as well as a chaace to chew the fat with fellow 4a owners.

I'm not entirely sure where your nearest TR supplier is to Norwich but suspect it may be Manvers Triumph at Elmswell near Bury St Edmunds. As a past customer I've personally always found Clive Manvers the owner very helpful.

Good luck with the car.

Regards

Trevor

Thanks Trevor & Mike,

Sorry I have not replied earlier as I have been in London all week on business.

Just joined TR Registar so plently of reading on the way.

I have heard that Clive Manvers is a very good so I may well check him out as it's quite a nice drive down to Suffolk, if I can get past boarder control.

Once the TR is on the road maybe we can get together as North Norfolk is superb for driving along the coast road's.

Thanks again
