Locking Wheel Nuys

Recommended Posts

My wheels were shipped with a taper set which was subsequently refunded; I gave up looking in the end!

Let me run this idea past you. As i remember from my toolroom days the taper for a countersunk cap screws was 82 degrees. If the taper on the locking wheel nut is the same, what do you think if this taper is machined into one hole in the wheel.

Bit puzzled by this chaps.

My minilites, just bought, came with a steel insert in each mounting hole which is countersunk on the outboard side. Have not measured the angle, but the nuts, not surprisingly are also tapered to fit neatly in the csk of the wheel . Is this the taper you are talking of? If so it seems I need tapered locking nut. or are you talking of some other taper. I believe older minilites were not fitted with inserts so maybe thats where the confusion lies ??

Cheers

If there's no countersunk steel insert, square wheel nuts or bolts should be use. I believe there was a problem (all alloy wheels - not just minilites) with people using the old conical fixers which, when/if overtightened, caused cracking to occur in the alloy.

There is no steel insert in the wheel so i guess the idea of machining is a no go.

Sorry to change the subject but i see you live in Mullion, 30 years ago we spent our honymoon in the Polurion hotel and returned there every five years for about fifteen years. It was then owened by the Francis family. Is it still as good now as it was then? If so it may be worth a run out in the six.

Regards John.

Hi John, is KYD99 your registration, if so started its life in Somerset, and is avery good one (I'd like it anyway!). Yes, the Polurrian Hotel is still going strong although no longer with the Francis family - sold off best part of 10yrs ago. The original hotel was a lot nearer the cliff edge, but it caught fire and burned to the ground, would probably have subsided and gone over the cliff by now. We were actually in there on Sunday afternoon having a couple of drinks, less than a 10 minute walk and I'm trying to get out walking again, after foot and shoulder surgeries.

Hi John, no, sorry no information on your car at all - apply to DVLA for its history, costs £5 or £6. It's the reg. no. I like.

I'll have to find out when the Polurrian Hotel burnt down, early 1900s to the best of my recollections (from histories of the area, not personally!, although I often feel that old these days!). I'll also add a couple of links with photos.

Hi John, the original Polurrian Hotel was situated nearer the cliff (on the coastal side if the Footpath) and some of the original gardens are still there AFIK, it burnt down in 1906 and the new one built

I've a feeling that it would've gone over the cliff it it hadn't burnt down, very soft and crumbling at this point.
