  1. Albert Runyan posted some post-fire photos from 27 December 2023 to the “Triumphs List” listserv.  Just heartbreaking

Didn’t TRF have several of the Le Man TRS cars and a stock of Sabrina engines? If they have been destroyed, that will be a major loss to the Triumph community.

Fingers crossed they were somewhere else

    cheers Rich

Albert Runyan sold those several yesrs ago as he worked to settle Charles Runyan’s estate.

  3. I've had a cover on my garaged TR3B for ten years or so.  No microblistering, @Motorsport Mickey  :)  (I'd expect the 2-component base+clear paint on my car to be pretty hard to blister under any conditions.

Mine is from the US seller California Car Cover, who resells products made by Covercraft. It does a fine job of keeping dust off the car.  The drying effect of a carcoon is attractive, I'll say -- I wish I had that.

My biggest complaint is telling the front from the back when I unroll it from the boot.  I have the same kind of cover for two other vehicles and it's always a pain.  I get it wrong more than half the time.  I had an eBay vendor offering fabric nameplates for sports jerseys make me a white-on-black nameplate with my car's commission number, which when sewn on the front panel of the cover looks almost exactly like the UK number plate my car might have gotten had it been sold in Britain rather than Ohio.

I have a 1956 TR3 VIN No. TS10048L.  I am on the Westcoast of the US and having trouble with the Department of Motor Vehicles.   The title I have has the VIN as TS10048E which is an error but I can not convince the bureaucracy that the "E" is an error.  Any of you fine folks know where I can get documentation to support this.

Many states have an option for a vehicle inspection/commission number confirmation by the DMV or Highway Patrol for licensing.  That and showing several of the tons of published references to "L" being a commission number designation for left-hand steer, and "E" being a reference to an engine number would probably convince a person with some brains and authority (and there will be some of those people).  Does your state have that option, @Mccannro?

The possibly for your engine to match your commission number and both being TS10048 is virtually nil, but just to be sure I'd confirm exactly what IS your engine number.  There have been cases where TRs were registered to engine number rather than commission number.

Most VINs are modern 17-digit alphanumeric sequences conforming to FMVSS 115, Part 565 (in the USA).  We tend not to call them VINs, chassis numbers, or serial numbers on our sidescreen TRs, but rather commission numbers, following the terminology used by Standard Triumph.

The photo reminded me that I've often wondered how difficult is it to operate the handbrake on a LHD TR...

Yes, it's kind of inconvenient.  Even for those of us with long arms.

But the handbrake lever is completely out of the way for the 99.9% of the time it's not in use.  Especially over here, where most of us were taught decades ago to park a car in gear, preferably a low gear, to keep it from rolling.

Handbrakes are used sometimes, especially on a slope, but I don't think we Americans put the gearbox in neutral and engage the handbrake anywhere near as often as i've seen in the UK.

Hi, I’m not Andrea. I don’t know where this name is from.
The TR3B is not fitted with an adjustable steering and this is not mentioned on the Heritage Certificate list of extras fitted. And I do believe there was not any requirement for ignition locks for the italian market. See enclosed pictures of the steering and of the Heritage Certificate.

    Kindest regards,

My apologies, Mauro.  A former owner of TCF272L, I believe.

...In motor industry speak rationalised usually means an item that is used across a range of cars in this case it refers to the TR4 all synchro gearbox which was fitted to the TCF cars...

I think the rationalized gearboxes were across the TSF-series cars too, Mike.  My TSF202L has a full synchro gearbox, also noted on the BMIHT certificate.

Andrea -- your car didn't have adjustable steering from new, did it?  I believe S-T had a LOT of those assemblies to get rid of. during TR3B production!  Every TR3B I've seen in person over here had that option, and almost every one for which I've seen the build data.  Conventional steering was definitely uncommon on a TR3B.   Perhaps something about the Italian market kept it off your car?  Did Italy require ignition locks like a few other European countries?  That certainly changed the steering that was fitted if so.

  8. Rationalized gearbox = the full-synchromesh gearbox from the TR4.  Apparently that was the only gearbox in production at the time.  Having owned one for 40+ years, a full-synchro sidescreen car is one of the best mods one could make.  Better than the overdrive I added 10+ years ago, IMO.

    86 mm bore = the TR4 engine.  As expected for a TCF-series TR3B.

Duplo headlights = no info.  Lighting in those days was VERY different across European countries.  Lots of tiny differences market-to-market.

Italian instruction book = almost certainly something used for TR2/3/3A.  I've never seen anything like a TR3B-specific instruction book in any language, including English.

  9. Thanks, everyone!  Very nice day here today, and looking forward to another trip around the sun.

After a bunch of work on the TR3B this spring, I got to drive it about 30 miles before the overdrive stopped engaging and a puddle of DOT5 formed under the driver's feet...  How did we ever put miles on these things back in the day? :P

This is what I have, a lot cheaper when I bought mine about 5yrs ago but theyre definitely worth the money.

    Stuart.

Thanks, Stuart.  I've not checked that one out before.  There's no drying of the air, right?  Only frequent air changes.  And the filtration is electrostatic, not a porous membrane?

    You have the "Sportscar" size, I'm guessing (4.15 x 1.8 x 1.7 mm L-W-H)?  That seems about right for a sidescreen TR (3.84 x 1.41 x 1.27 m).

I've not had a storage issue with this garage for a good number years but there has to be a first time.

I have a plan for tomorrow - I just need that spark.

    Roger

Yep -- fuel and spark, and it'll fire.  I have complete confidence in ya, Roger!
