I’m at Goodwood now in the Motorhome on a grass pitch and the field is reasonably firm. With a mainly dry forecast for the w/end I may even be able to drive off under my own steam when it comes time to leave.
Looking forward to a great event.

The weather stayed dry and grass Motorhome pitch stayed firm so no problem getting off camping field.

An expensive weekend but fantastic racing, great peripheral activities and a fantastic firework display on Saturday evening.

  2. Adam Sykes drove one of the early Can Am cars, a Chinook Chevrolet, that were actually racing in the Surtees Trophy for unlimited sports prototypes between 64 & 66.
The Chinook was notably slow in period relative to the Lolas and McLaren M1s.
Surtees won the first Can Am championship in 66 in a Lola T70.

The Can Am demo cars were mostly a bit later from 68 - 74. One owner from the USA had 7 Shadows there inc the one that Jackie Oliver used to win the championship in 1974 with Oliver driving it in the demo.

Fantastic cars. Brute force in huge cars. What a sight.

  4. Jim, my stock consists of 3 aluminium grille cross bars but none of them are very pretty.
    One painted black silk finish

One painted red in the front channel

One without paint but quite scruffy.

None have the braid/tape and end clips in the front channel.
I think from your comments about you are trying to achieve they are unlikely to suit your needs.
    Sorry

  5. Jim,

I’ve just tidied up my cross bar this weekend by dismantling from the grille and used Solvol Autosol and a bit of elbow grease. Pleased with result

If that doesn’t appeal I do have a spare grille aluminium cross bar in my stock but I’ll have to check condition.

Yep - it's quite common for odd 'security' screws to be used these days. As you say - it's to deter you from getting inside. Some have a cenral spigot too.   You need a set of these:

I bought a set of 5 sided Torx keys recently on eBay to release a radio from my BMW Z3 dash. Quite cheap.
Btw Tony, what is it that you are trying to get into?

  7. Pete,

Classic Car Developments (CDD) sell a stepped stud for this, one end oversize 3/8” unf to fit into the trailing arm and other end 5/16” unf to carry the hub as standard.
My reticence would be that, as Mick mentions eloquently above, some of the localised “blocks” incorporated around the rim of the trailing arm are very marginal for drilling oversize. This has the potential for the drill/tap to break through the outside.
My own solution as a “racing lad” has been to replace the 5/16” unf tappings with 5/16”unc helicoils and use unc cap head screws rather than studs and nuts. Many years of satisfactory use on race TR6 with wide sticky tyres  and high corner side loads. Use standard torque, 16 lb ft, though I do check them every 2 or 3 race’s just to be sure.

  8. DISADVANTAGES

    DISADVANTAGES

EPDM is one of the best rubber polymers, but it still has its disadvantages. While it does well in extreme temperatures, it does not possess good flame resistance. It also does not have good resistance to mineral oils or petroleum oils. If exposed to these elements for an extended period, EPDM will deteriorate. It is also difficult to make a strong rubber-to-metal bond with EPDM.

Following Waldis’ comments above I searched the internet and found the note above which confirms Waldis’ message, together with also highlighting a poor bond to metal. That doesn’t bode well for my race TR6 application where, no matter how carefully the engine is built, it seems to be impossible to avoid oil leaks.
I’ll be thinking again on this one.

Considering how many (Triumph) cars use these mounts, perhaps one of the Polyurethane suppliers might be interested??

    Can the Club ask??

    John,

Rimmers list p/No UKC8330poly as an alternative to the rubber UKC8330.

The expensive Stag ones that Tim D mentions are listed as 70 shore rubber. Does anyone know what ??shore rubber the standard UKC8330 items are?

This is something that I’m interested in having had a standard item fail on my race TR6 in a 2023 race. Uprated units for TR7 V8s made from harder/stronger rubber used to be available but haven’t been readily available for several years I believe.

Oh dear , this is starting to get complicated. My present combination of wire road wheels and a steel rim spare means in the event of a puncture, not only have I got to get a wire wheel off I have to get the wire wheel extension off as well. This seems a fairly onerous task as I imagine getting the extension off at the roadside is no easy matter, as well as having to carry more quite heavy tools !
Anything I am missing here ?

Rob, yes you are missing something. Usually the wheel studs which secure the wire wheel splined hub extension are very short with special thin wheel nuts. Even if you manage to get the extension off, these short studs are not long enough to safely fix the steel wheel.
