  1. Just to add spice…did anyone in UK ever fit twin Mikuni 45s to a TR2-4?   The North Americans seem to be getting them to work by fitting to original inlet manifold in place of the twin SU or Stroms.

    https://www.triumphexp.com/forum/tr4-and-tr4a-forum.7/another-tr4a-mikuni-carb-upgrade.1367107/

I have decided the twin 42 DCOE kit we have will not get used as simplicity of the SU remains paramount.  ( they are available for sale)
As stated, the DCOE carb give strong performance at higher rpms but as a round town and touring item the economy is not too special.

    Hi,

does anybody know how much volume of coolant flows through the rad per minute / hour?

    Ciao, Marco

Is that theoretical maximum flow possible through the radiator from inlet and outlet pipes and flowing through all the cooling tube cores?

Is the rate of cooling also a determining factor?

In service when fitted the rate of flow will vary with pump speed, which is set by engine speed.

i have found this discussion but am not sure it is what you are asking.

6-3-1 pairing 1-6,2-5 and 3-4 gives them equal firing order spacing. Richard Good's version has equal length primaries and secondaries which he tested against Phoenix's version where they are apparently unequal and found a big difference in his favor. The downside is Richard " cannot build it in stainless " ostensibly due to the metal's relative reluctance to bend into the tight radius required for 1 & 6 cylinders where mild steel can. He has his " ceramic " coated in (3) different temperature ranges.

I have experience with this on my trick engine with very high lift cam and triple DCOEs ( of course ^_^ ) and it brought in the mid range where a 6-2-1 from Racetorations would not, no matter what I tried in the Webers. Moreover, it did so with (1) size smaller main jet and (7) sizes larger air corrector!

My CP spec driver OTOH does fine with the 6-2-1 ( which is why I tried it first on the trick engine ).

My takeaway is the breathing is optimized with a proper [ GOODPARTS type ] 6-3-1 and (6) throttles. Note that triple singles cannot draw evenly due to varying firing order spacing on an inline 6.

Richard Good acknowledges that every type of manifold design makes compromises. In the case of his, I suppose a 6-1 banana bunch style full-race manifold will beat it, but not make it as drivable on the street.

    Plus one for GoodParts.

If thinking of obtaining just be sure and have confirmed the manifold you buy is suitable for Right Hand Drive steering cars.   It is quite annoying to find some clown put a steering shaft where the exhaust manifold pipe is.   Clubbing it with a mallet to relieve the rubbing will probably negate any benefits tge manifold provided.

i speak from experience of seeing 50 Janspeed LCB type Sprite exhaust manifolds shipped to the US only to have them returned as ‘do not fit’.  Steering is in the way.

Thanks for th equick respones chaps.

No probs with the celly thinners, but I don't have an ultrasonic bath,

wandering now on the thoughts on, an overnight soak in thinners then a rinse and blast in the dishwasher?

    John.

You have salt in the dishwasher which may cause corrosion on the ally.

In rebuilding the front suspension on my '4, I have found that I have, from the top:

    Rubber washer

    Aluminium packing piece

    Rubber washer

    Coil spring

    Rubber washer

Which initially strikes me as correct, and the Parts Catalogue seems to support this. But a very experienced TR friend is adamant that the coil fits directly into the packing piece. (Maybe to prevent spring & packing piece wobble?)

    What is correct/best practice?

    Thanks, Adrian

Agreed for TR2-3-4 with the spacer fitted.

  6. Hi Richard.

Not daft questions but a sensible start.

Is the thing filled to the filler hole in the  column with the correct oil?   If you only fill through the top cover screwed plug the upper bearing that supports the worm and shaft may be dry.
Have you greased/oiled the front suspension trunions and all steering joints?

What are the front tyre pressures?

How old are the front tyres?

I get on well with re-using window cleaner trigger operated aerosol bottles.

    - I like ‘em cos they’re free.

    james

I use a Lidl all purpose’s cleaner trigger spray bottle filled with soluble oil(suds) in the workshop.  They last for about 3 months then the pump fails.  By which time another has been used in the house.  And so the cycle restarts.   I tried them with brake cleaner and they fail in about 10 days.

    Hi,

sorry if I use Your topic to make a question: is possible to remove and replace a new bearing without removing the part 45/48 ?

I checked and I think my back wheel need a new bearing, I hope it's an "easy" job for a Sunday afternoon.

    thanks for help

    Max

No the flange must be removed from the axle shaft

    +1

Removed the old cigarette lighter fitting that PO had fitted and replaced with one of these. As most “ accessories “ are now charged via USB it seems the obvious choice. The voltmeter is a bonus and combined with original ammeter covers all aspects of battery condition and charging.

Trusting you are running your car negative earth if you have a regular type of cigarette lighter power socket, or the accessory you plug in will fry.   Friend managed to wreck his sat nav in his Dart by doing just that.

  10. And we struggled to sell new hardtop shells in primers with headlining for £75.00.   We also had fully finished in body colour and glazing with fitting kits that sold for £250.    Get in your TARDIS and pop back to 1988.

Yes, that is normal, you want the suspension to respond to a bump by moving up quickly, but to avoid oscillation the damper only allows the suspension to drop more slowly.

    Bob

Which is why you do not have dampers that are very firm.   You can end up with ‘jack down’ where the suspension is compressed but the spring is not strong enough to extend against a very firm damper.

  12. My delight when driving in Wales came when driving on the motorway……at 50 mph.   Both lanes blocked by traffic doing 49 to 51 mph.   The police car with siren and lights was refused progress along the road by all traffic.   Not a single vehicle moved to allow it to pass.  It resorted to weaving onto the hard shoulder to get further down to the road faster than the traffic.     Good to see the emergency services are not hindered by the territorial governments speed policy.

Similar deal in London.  If you are sat at a red traffic light and an emergency services vehicle on a shout comes  up behind you; you stay where you are blocking their progress.    You do not cross the stop line to allow it to pass, as the mayor of London’s cameras  will spot you and he will shove his hand in your pocket for not stopping at a red light.

  13. My brother has kindly welded up the loose shaft and timing weight plate in a DM2 distributor.  It was loose and moving axially plus radially by about 15 degrees.   New ones are around but the welding is a nice workshop solution.   Originals are crimped together.  If this fails it is off to DD.

Next job is machine the excess weld off to get the weights to fit ok.    That’ll fix the points and timing scatter the old distributor had….that being the best part of 15 degrees of slop.   Made timing the engine as good as impossible as the advance and retard randomly changed when driving.     The engine would start and run but pink like fury under load or pop and bang on overrun
