  1. Somehow I forgot to order two wheel cylinders... Leaky one is now replaced and I found the clutch master cylinder was weeping slightly so replaced that as well.

I've yet to bleed the system, I'm going to be using a hand operated vacuum pump to draw the air out. Let's see if it works...

This shows the access to propshaft grease nipple.

It looks to me from your photo that you had the access hole, but it has been welded up ?

    Thanks Bob!

Yes, there is a rather crude patch welded into the gearbox tunnel

I need to order new brake wheel cylinders (might as well do both), whilst I'm waiting I'll remove the tunnel and try to weld the bottom seam to remove the patch without the rear section getting all flimsy.

  3. Wow, almost two years since my last post... The TR has seen very little use the past couple of years apart from the odd local trip with young Will. Two young kids and a vintage Alvis all competing for attention have meant the TR bring sidelined too often.

Nonetheless I thought I would spend a few evenings greasing the TR and giving the whole car a proper check over so she's ready for spring.

I found a disintegrated gaiter on the front ball joint and more worryingly are leaking rear wheel cylinder.

I repainted and waxed the underneath almost 4 years ago when I bought the car and it all looks good apart from where the floors flexing has broken away the paint and I can see some rust.

Overall it's very solid but the front suspension could your with an overhaul and the rear springs need oiling.

I can't access the grease nipple at the front of the prop and there's no hole in the tunnel. I was going to drill in the top center of the gearbox tunnel and use a rubber bung to seal the hole once I'm done. Where is it usually placed? Thanks

Have a great Birthday and driving your TR. How time flies from those old London Group days, Happy motoring/Birthday.

    Thanks everyone!

18 years since my first pub group meeting and the addiction is still strong!

The TR has been behaving itself of late so I've been spannering on the Alvis...

  5. Hi Clive

I might be reading this wrong but surely the clutch is always engaged against the flywheel and should only disengage when you press in the clutch pedal?

Could you engage a gear with the same engine running but there was no take up / forward motion when you let out the pedal?

    Best,

    Eli

There’s some really interesting comments in here. Thanks everyone.
I finally pulled the engine and started the strip down. Sure enough big end bearing on pot number one was trashed.
I think that a complete strip and measure is necessary however my first port of call will be to check the oil path through the crank. I will try to remove the slot headed plugs in the crank first.
    so much to look at!!!!

certainly going to look at the oil pump as well

now to start looking at that manual.

Would be great if you could post some photos of the strip down and the parts you're checking as you go along. Thanks!

Glad to see that some of the waters have gone down or were you looking for higher ground for the next flood....?

    james

    Hi James

Thanks. Still a few roads blocked off today and some villages remain flooded but the rest of us are back to normal.

The bakery where my wife used to work has 6in of water still today, it's been two weeks. Sad but they were absolute a**eholes to work for!

    Great shots Eli.

Nice to see the little man coming along for the ride.  Navigating sure can take it out of a fella!  :D   zz  zzz  zzzz   zzzzzz

How's the surf been in your neck of the woods this summer? Been on the board much?

    Cheers, Deggers

Had clean but small (approx 2ft) conditions last Sunday, combined with a bit of sun. I had a great time. Haven't been out much, July weather was miserable then we were on holiday in the center of France (did 1500mi in the Volvo and we slept in a roof top tent, all four of us!). Kids, work and lots of weekends away manage to get in the way of surfing but we've got a surf trip in October to Normandy lined up. Must do Cornwall one day, maybe next Spring.

I used the TR a fair amount last week and a friend of my parents stopped by with his Healey. Said it's a physically demanding car to drive, much better to look at than to sit in! (he's also got a TR6 which he finds much better for longer trips). His overdrive isn't engaging and the local garages aren't familiar with them so I gave him a few names to contact.

  9. I thought you all would appreciate some highlights of my recent adventure. The Alvis whisked Dad and myself down to le Mans in post vintage style. Our only car related mishap was running out of fuel 400 yards from a petrol station!

It was a fantastic weekend but there's almost too much going on to take it all in. Plus we had a 5am start on Sunday to make it home for a family event. It's taken me the better part of this week to recover!

I'll the TR to the next event, the Normandy Beach Race in September. Anyone else here going?

That's a splendid looking motor on the right of your photo - is it an Alvis, and what type?

My Uncle owned a 1925 3-litre Bentley for 60 years from 1938; this car looks to be somewhat later than 1925.

    Ian Cornish

    Hi Ian

Yes, I'm very pleased with this one, an 1931 alvis 12/50 TJ tourer. Sold the stag and a motorbike to pay for it and no regrets so far!

50mph cruising with room for the family. It's a very well engineered car, nice and tight and so far (fingers crossed) not at all temperamental.

  11. Got up before the kids and torqued up the head to 105ft lbs.

The tap insert did indeed unscrew. I reassembled with wellseal, set the tappets and replenished the rad with distilled water.

She fired up easy and apart from smoke which I'm pretty certain is from spilt coolant seemed to be running fine.

Today was a major spring cleaning day so I wasn't allowed to go for a test drive. Maybe tomorrow if madame allows me...

At least the kids love being by the garage

For the future you could fit an angled fitting between head and heater valve, as later did on the 4/4A

Thanks Marco. I'm going to have to cut down the existing fitting anyway... The valve spring is in the way!

  13. I started with the torque wrench set at 105lb ft, slacked it off by a flat but felt like it was going to go way past where it used to be so I stopped and tried again with 100lb ft. The wrench stopped with the nut past it's original point by 1/2 a flat. Same for stud number 2 but I need to pick up a thinner socket for no 3.

    20230507-194210.jpg

Any ideas how to tighten this one? Thanks

  14. Thanks all for the quick responses.

I started her up today and took her for a 15min drive, all seems well. No steam out of the exhaust, no coolant loss and no overheating.

My tools are at my parents place, I'll swing by and pick up my torque wrench at the end of the week.

    Fingers crossed!

  15. Hi all

Did 50mi in the TR yesterday, then the same today, didn't miss a beat.

Then I let a friend drive and I led in the Alvis to go to a classic car meet that turned out to be a non event. Whilst we were waiting to park the TR boiled over. I jumped out of the Alvis, switched off the TR but the needle on the temp gauge was already all the way to the right. The kenlowe hadn't automatically switched on and my friend didn't know about the manual override.

We had a drink, drove the Alvis home and left the TR for a couple of hours to cool down. When I returned, it only needed about a pint of water to get to the usual level, started and ran perfectly for the 10mi home. No smoke from the exhaust and water level was the same before and after the drive back. Took the rad cap off and ran the engine and no bubbles.

Looks like there could be a hint of mayo in the filler cap but rocker and valves look clean and the oil is spotless.

How long should it take for a head gasket failure to show up?

  16. First drive in months here. Took a few miles to get all the old petrol out of the carbs which were pretty gummed up despite the fuel stabiliser I had used then the TR was back on song.

Changed the oil and filter but the sump plug fell into the catch pan and blocked the hole and I ended up with the garage floor covered in oil!

I'll flush out the coolant next, it's been at least a couple of years

The TRs new home is nearly ready, I hung the doors with a friend yesterday. Got to paint them and paint the floor before I get the cars home.
