  1. I can remember going to the motorshow at the NEC when the first SLK was released (1995?) and I recall it being Sportlich, Leicht, Kurz. We had an SLK280 for many years, in fact I only sold it when my wife died. The only issue we ever had was the gearbox selector plate had to be replaced when the car was about 10 years old. Rgds Ian
  2. One reason is because the blue stuff is very toxic. And it’s not about spending a lot of time looking for an alternative, the alternative has been out there for a while. But in the end it comes down to personal choice, I went with Fernox and to date am happy with it. Rgds Ian
  3. My 1959 TR3a has 14 around the body at the rear and four on each door. This aligns with all the info I had at the time of doing the original restoration back in 2010ish. Two of the body ones are low down alongside the ‘B’ post for the doors. One each side. Rgds Ian
  4. FWIW, I have using Fernox Alpha for the last couple of years. Apart from being kinder to the environment (allegedly), it only has to be changed every 10 years. Rgds Ian
  5. Maybe this the reason why I had a message this morning advising me to change a whole heap of passwords because they had been compromised through a data hack. Rgds Ian
  6. A bit late in the day, but why is he buying/ has he bought a Defender? I recently bought a new (to me) SUV and I avoided Range Rover completely because of this issue of cloning. The only way to impact the manufacturer is through sales. If the public stops buying cars with keyless go, the manufacturers would be forced to come up with something more secure. Rgds Ian
  7. Thank you all, plenty of food for thought there. Needless to say I won’t be buying the genuine item at $350 and I do like the rod although it does look a bit pricey. I’ll post how I get on in due course. Rgds Ian
  8. I have pair of those already thks George but I wanted something period to fit at the top of the screen. Rgds Ian
  9. I occasionally use a boot bag on my TR3a with result that it blocks the view from my dashboard mounted rear view mirror. I have often thought about fitting a mirror on a rod ‘a la’ e- type or MG. Has anyone on the forum done this and if so who supplies the best set of bits? Rgds Ian
  10. I’m not sure about that Bob, my LED ones are pretty bright. The reflection back off road signs is just as bright if not brighter than the lights on my daily driver with HID lights. Rgds Ian
  11. Without wishing to be a pedant, they could be flat but not perpendicular to the thread.
  12. Nope, the one inside. But check all the things suggested by the others before you start removing the gearbox. Rgds Ian
  13. I'd be worried that the pin in the clutch operating arm has sheared. Rgds Ian
  14. Judging by the speeds the average white van man gets up to, I wouldn't be too worried about the speed rating. What do you use your TR for? Rgds Ian
  15. I cleaned mine with a homemade soda blaster. It worked a treat. Rgds Ian
  16. I set my torque wrench to 60 ft-lbs for the wire wheel extension nuts and use loctite as well, but I have had one come loose a long time ago. Very disconcerting plus it knackered the studs and I had the faff of replacing them. Rgds Ian
  17. I bought something very similar to that from Lidl a couple of years ago. Cost me £7 I think, so maybe keep an eye out for when they have them again. Rgds Ian
  18. The problem with the Gunsons Eze-bleed for me was getting a seal at the top of the fluid reservoir. The thread is not very well formed and it was very hit or miss and then the final time I tried to use it the cap actually blew off and sprayed the engine bay with brake fluid. It’s been on the shelf ever since and I’ve found a work around. Rgds Ian
  19. Having had problems in the past with liner heights, when I rebuilt my engine, (coincidentally at about the same time as Bob did his), I entrusted the whole machining exercise to a reputed machine shop, (the same firm that does all the work for Revington) and for about £1,000 they sorted everything including decking the pistons, crack testing the crank and then giving it a re grind and balancing everything. Money well spent as far as I was concerned. They even cleaned everything and blew out the crank. All I had to do was put it back together. Rgds Ian
  20. I agree it’s an issue but it’s naive to think that even in the unlikely event that the petition reaches the 100k threshold the Government is going to do anything about it. My solution has been to fit Classic Car LED bulbs so that I have the ability to see past the oncoming vehicles. Not really the right answer I know but one that recognises reality. Let’s face it, my current daily driver is an SUV with modern high intensity lights and I would be very pissed off if someone told me to downgrade them to something less effective. Rgds Ian
  21. Good suggestion, I’ll give it a go tomorrow. Thanks. Rgds Ian
  22. The title of the topic says it all really. Up until this year the temperature gauge on my TR3a has been very reliable and then a couple of days ago during a break from the incessant rain that we have been experiencing for the last few months, I took the car out for a run. The car was running sweetly and I did about 20 miles at varying speeds before I noticed that the temperature gauge hadn't got up to its normal operating range. I guess it took a while for me to notice it because it was a fairly chilly day. Anyway I then watched the gauge closely for the remainder of my trip (about ano
  23. I use Loctite 270 for critical applications. You can undo it but you need a big spanner and then clean the threads afterwards. It is also oil and grease tolerant. Rgds Ian
