If I were using mine every day then I would want a 100 or even 200 litre tank but since I only use mine intermittently now, the 50 litre tank is fine and takes less time to come up to pressure when I turn it on.

I can remember going to the motorshow at the NEC when the first SLK was released (1995?) and I recall it being Sportlich, Leicht, Kurz.
We had an SLK280 for many years, in fact I only sold it when my wife died. The only issue we ever had was the gearbox selector plate had to be replaced when the car was about 10 years old.

Blue antifreeze concentrate is about £6 a litre. Why spend so much effort trying to find an alternative which may or may not be good for your engine when purpose designed coolant is so cheap and readily available?
Mike.
One reason is because the blue stuff is very toxic. And it’s not about spending a lot of time looking for an alternative, the alternative has been out there for a while.
But in the end it comes down to personal choice, I went with Fernox and to date am happy with it.

Very cunning with the two sticky pads.

My 1959 TR3a has 14 around the body at the rear and four on each door. This aligns with all the info I had at the time of doing the original restoration back in 2010ish. Two of the body ones are low down alongside the ‘B’ post for the doors. One each side.

FWIW, I have using Fernox Alpha for the last couple of years. Apart from being kinder to the environment (allegedly), it only has to be changed every 10 years.

Maybe this the reason why I had a message this morning advising me to change a whole heap of passwords because they had been compromised through a data hack.

My nephew had his brand new Range Rover stolen from outside his house by someone cloning the key, reported to police but never recovered. Insurance paid out and he replaced it with another new Range Rover, when he came to re-insure his insurance refused him cover, and the ‘cheapest’ quote he could obtain was circa £8k per annum. He approached Range Rover as the manufacturer, and they would not insure him as they said, they were one of the most stolen vehicles and therefore uninsurable.
Result he sold it back to Range Rover and got a deal with insurance on a new Defender with tracker.
A bit late in the day, but why is he buying/ has he bought a Defender? I recently bought a new (to me) SUV and I avoided Range Rover completely because of this issue of cloning. The only way to impact the manufacturer is through sales. If the public stops buying cars with keyless go, the manufacturers would be forced to come up with something more secure.

Thank you all, plenty of food for thought there. Needless to say I won’t be buying the genuine item at $350 and I do like the rod although it does look a bit pricey. I’ll post how I get on in due course.

Hi Ian
the works team cars used a Lucas mirror hanging from the HT centre windscreen mounting.
I’ll try to recall/photograph which model it’s is and let you know.

Thks Iain.

I have a pair of Harley Davison mirrors that fit in to one of the windscreen screw positions. They look in period are well made and give a good clear view
George

I occasionally use a boot bag on my TR3a with result that it blocks the view from my dashboard mounted rear view mirror. I have often thought about fitting a mirror on a rod ‘a la’ e- type or MG. Has anyone on the forum done this and if so who supplies the best set of bits?

I wish a distinction could be drawn between LED headlights, & HID ones (which are much brighter)
Bob
I’m not sure about that Bob, my LED ones are pretty bright. The reflection back off road signs is just as bright if not brighter than the lights on my daily driver with HID lights.

If the fibre washers are still letting fuel through then either the fixing is not tight enough, or the surfaces of the mating parts are not flat.
Bob
Without wishing to be a pedant, they could be flat but not perpendicular to the thread.

Is that the one on the outside of the bell housing?
Nope, the one inside. But check all the things suggested by the others before you start removing the gearbox.

I'd be worried that the pin in the clutch operating arm has sheared.

Judging by the speeds the average white van man gets up to, I wouldn't be too worried about the speed rating. What do you use your TR for?

I cleaned mine with a homemade soda blaster. It worked a treat.

Thanks for the reply. I have been using the drive for over 5 years and this is the first time that I have a tyre problem. The tyres wheels and hub extensions for the wire wheels have all been renewed in the last few years. I have a special wrench for the tapered nuts holding the extensions and it was set at 50 . Is this correct ?
Thanks
Richard & B
I set my torque wrench to 60 ft-lbs for the wire wheel extension nuts and use loctite as well, but I have had one come loose a long time ago. Very disconcerting plus it knackered the studs and I had the faff of replacing them.

I bought something very similar to that from Lidl a couple of years ago. Cost me £7 I think, so maybe keep an eye out for when they have them again.

The problem with the Gunsons Eze-bleed for me was getting a seal at the top of the fluid reservoir. The thread is not very well formed and it was very hit or miss and then the final time I tried to use it the cap actually blew off and sprayed the engine bay with brake fluid. It’s been on the shelf ever since and I’ve found a work around.

Having had problems in the past with liner heights, when I rebuilt my engine, (coincidentally at about the same time as Bob did his), I entrusted the whole machining exercise to a reputed machine shop, (the same firm that does all the work for Revington) and for about £1,000 they sorted everything including decking the pistons, crack testing the crank and then giving it a re grind and balancing everything. Money well spent as far as I was concerned. They even cleaned everything and blew out the crank. All I had to do was put it back together.

I agree it’s an issue but it’s naive to think that even in the unlikely event that the petition reaches the 100k threshold the Government is going to do anything about it. My solution has been to fit Classic Car LED bulbs so that I have the ability to see past the oncoming vehicles. Not really the right answer I know but one that recognises reality. Let’s face it, my current daily driver is an SUV with modern high intensity lights and I would be very pissed off if someone told me to downgrade them to something less effective.

I have experienced this a couple of times after a winter break. I have managed to remediate the under reading by adding some coolant -even a lot of coolant - and then let the car get really hot on tick over with the front end well raised.
My deduction is that an airlock forms in the bulb/ thermostat housing.
james
Good suggestion, I’ll give it a go tomorrow. Thanks.
