  3. I owned this car in the mid 1970's. Unfortunately I have no other details. It was painted Saab green and had a 1991cc engine that was SAH tuned with twin 42DCOE Webbers.. I removed the engine prior to selling it and fitted a standard TR 2 unit. It was purchased from a 'back street' garage in Grimsby and I sold it to a work colleague who got it rear ended in Lincoln. The know that the insurance company repaired it, I moved away and lost contact with it thereon after. It was fast with the TR2 engine but with the original engine it was nearly dangerous!!   4. It is a good point re non flammable cleaner.......should have mentioned it....I used Carplan water based engine cleaner. Do the spin drying outside.......definitely not the kitchen!!!
  5. 2,3 and 4 Aircleaner Cleaning. I made one of these. Get a container of your chosen liquid cleaner. Attach the 'thingy' to the aircleaner. Spin in the cleaner, with your pistol drill. I also let the aircleaners soak over night. Remove from the container, allow to drain and then spin in the drill until dry. I was amazed how much crud came out of mine and how open the mesh now is. Using this method ensures that any crud is thrown outwards.....the way it came in.
  6. I thought that the main advantage of an aluminium sump is that it strengthens the relatively weak bottom of the crankcase. Needed only if the engine is highly tuned and driven hard. If oil cooling is the objective, who remembers the cheap fix of drilling two 1" diameter holes in the front and back face of the standard steel sump below the oil level and missing the pump pickup and welding two pipes between them so that air flows through them via the forward motion of the car. One of the cheap tuning fixes when the cars were worth very little and we had little money.

  8. Hi Roger, A Fergy crank would be a bit short. The 6 cylinder Talbot crank is machined out of a triangular forged billet. I have a factory movie of the turner machining it on a lathe that was probably 20 years old in 1933. The cost of a TR crank would probably pale into insignificance compared to getting someone to make a Talbot one...do-able though. Note TR in the background keeping an eye on things. The Fergy continues to plod on....I doubt that even a nuclear explosion could stop it working..... Dick
  9. Hi Roger, Thx for the quick reply. The reason that I need the info is because of a rattle in the engine of the attached car. Because spares for the engine are very limited a lot of improvisation is needed. So how to turn a Talbot engine into a Triumph hybrid........ Triumph 2000 Mk1 pistons. Arrow conrods machined to take shell bigends. Triumph Spitfire bigend shells. Two sets in each rod due to the width of the journal. New cam by Kent......profiles as per Brabham Viva.   12. In the dim and distant past I lost the grommet in my car. I think that I used one from the transmission cover for a Series 3 Land Rover. There are some on Ebay. Perhaps you could get the supplier to measure one to make sure.

  14. Apparently the Fergy had the crank seal because it was expected to operate at gradients that could get the sump oil level above the rear main bearing and therefore leak oil by gravity especially when stationary.

  17. Hi Ian, The screws that you refer to are just blocking up holes that had been used for vacuum gauge tappings. The balance pipe is fixed. Regards, Dick.
  18. I'm guessing SAH. Attached is what is on my car. When I bought it, 47 years ago, it also had an SAH head and tele shocks at the rear.

  20. Thanks for the replies. The offset not only helps to reduce piston slap but even though its a small amount helps the piston 'roll' over TDC and BDC enabling higher revs with less stress on the conrod. If you draw out the geometry it is more understandable. There is a fair amout on the net that I found this afternoon. Another way of getting the same effect is to bore the little end offset and not offset the gudgeon pin. I attach a photo of the project.....6 cylinder, 3000cc, 105bhp as standard at 4500rpm. Most spares are 'make it yourself'!! The engine rebuild included....
  21. I've got a project on the go at the moment that involves an engine rebuild using County pistons. They are Triumph 2000 + 0.030". Now, measuring the pistons, there is a 0.020 offset on the gudgeon pin. There are no front arrow orientation marks on the piston crown. So which way round does the shortest side of the offset go? I think it is to the thrust side of the cylinder. The engine is conventional clockwise rotation.....looking from the starting handle end, so the thrust side would be on the left. So short side of the piston to the left?? Any advice gratefully received. Regards
  22. Would be interesting to know which car. I have been chasing low oil pressure on a 1933 Talbot. Was main and cam shaft bearings. Dick.
