  1. Back in the 1990s while waiting for a ferry in the Scottish islands in our TRs a little old lady said I used to have one of those. When pressed for more information she revealed that she was Rosemary Smith the ex works rally driver.   A super lady.

Have you bought a TARDIS Hoges and gone back to being a teenager?

WTF are they supposed to signify?  I just spotted the smiley face at the top rh of the options bar.  I have also pressed all the other symbols and cannot work out what some of them actually do.

    Is this an age thing?

    :lol::ph34r::wub:

No Peter. I don't have a TARDIS , although I wish we could all go back in time when there was none of this woke **** around!   The emoji I wanted to use was a thinking head because in my usual fashion I was posting a potential hand grenade on the future of the TRR for people to mull over.

If youve tried using a phone or Ipad emoji thats the problem as forum software only allows the emojis in the top line on each post page. You would be better off copying  and pasting what youve written into another post without the emoji and delete original.

    Stuart.

Thanks Stuart. I thought that might be the case.

  4. Hi there. I have just written a post which included an emoji but I cannot upload my post as it says the emoji is not allowed. I have tried to delete the emoji but I cannot do that either.  How can I delete bit with re writing the whole post ?

  5. Just as an update, I along with many other TR members attended Pete's funeral last Thursday. A great turn out with over 250 people present paying their respects to the man.  A great life lived to the very end.

  6. And they weren't all that well made either despite being assembled by Jensen.  The body had to be welded to chassis to stop the bulkhead shaking itself to bits!  And the heat from the exhaust under the floor could cook your legs too. One of my jobs as an apprentice was to cut and fit the asbestos sheet used to try and stop it.

  7. Noticibly abscence from our web site I thought I would post  the news that 54 years ago today the TR Register was formed at Hopcrofts Holt , Steeple Aston, Oxfordshire.  The Old Farts will be commemorating this milestone this weekend.  Shame it's escaped the attention of the board.

I did see him drive his red TR3A.   It was written off not long after that and he broke the wreck on his driveway at No 11.  I bought the wheels and near new tyres they were Dunlop  165 SP sports that probably came from Cox at a fiver a corner.

Like Bill P above I never saw Pete drive a TR but he did have a BRG Dove sitting on his drive at home. I wonder where that went?

  9. Many of you will have heard by now that Pete Buckles, one of the founders of Cox & Buckles Spares, the forerunner of Moss Europe, passed away on Christmas Day.

His passing, together with the devastating fire at the Roadster Factory in America on the same day is a tragic blow to anyone who owns or drives a TR.

Peter often collaborated with Charles Runyan in getting spares made because the size of the American market made it viable to produce  parts for for the much smaller UK and European market.

Peter was a forthright person who didn't suffer fools gladly and yet could also be the most generous of people. It wasn't unknown for him to donate parts to people he knew were having trouble with their cars and bills were sometimes never sent.

His generosity to the TR Register is known only to a few but it should never be forgotten that without his help and support the club could have ceased to exist.

I knew him as a friend for over 45 years and his ability to quote part numbers never ceased to amaze me because he was never wrong.  He was a man with a sharp wit and an encyclopedic knowledge of the triumph marque but in all of those 45 years I never once saw him in a TR  even though he did once own a Dove.

Our thoughts go to his daughter's and to his partner Irene who was in many ways more than a match for him.

Well done Paul. Shame that your article missed the latest issue but as Pete says Trev is still new to the role and still relatively new to the club, so please give him some leeway. It will still be news to 99% of the club when it hits the next issue.

For those people who didn't read the article: you would have read that the TR Register donated the £500 prize money. The club supported Pauls' efforts to the full extent that he requested. The MT made that decision back in June. Nice to hear now that the project did go ahead and was a success.

    Mick

You are missing the point Mick. It's not a question of giving the new editor some slack. I was assured that it would be in the next mag  and that assurance turned out to be worthless. I see little  point  in publicising something  which will now be five months out of date. We should be advertising up coming events.

The other gripe I have is that  the board knew what I was trying to achieve for the best part of two years but not once was I asked how it was going. I really appreciated the donation to the guide dogs charity as did they but what PR did the registet get out of it? Absolutely none. And yet we employ a PR professional who didn't/ couldn't be bothered to get in touch with me about it when I asked him to.

Having this event staged at the Goodwood Revival where over 100,000 people were in attendance at arguably the most prestigious classic car event in the UK just goes to show how out of touch the board are.  After all, you told me in June when I was in Holland with you that the register would be putting up the £500 donation so the club had plenty of time to organise something.

At the very least this should have appeared in Classic Car weekly and Practical  Classics or been circulated to all the other classic car mags. It was only by my own efforts that it appeared in Octane, the Auster and the Guide Dogs magazines.

  11. I don't know if any of you watch 'Geof Buys Cars' but his latest video is well worth a watching.  See the link below.    If only 50% of what he says is true then the future is not looking good.  Car insurance is a legal requirement but if this digital scenario goes through to this conclusion we are in for a tough time.  Remember that the digital world of the banks and government is already with us.  How often do we see CARD ONLY payments at the till.? The drive to get rid of cash is already here.  At the petrol station, they already know how much fuel you are buying so how long before road pricing comes along?  ( Hello Mr Khan) You can imagine the scene,  you try to top up your tank and a voice over the tannoy says you have used up your allocation of fuel.  Impossible? I don't think so.  Anyway, take a look at the video and think does it tie up with what we are already experiencing?

  12. A couple of years ago I posted about an event that took place in 1956 about an economy  'race' between a TR3 and Auster J4 from lands End to John O'Groats.  I discovered that both the aircraft and a sister car still existed and so I decided to see if I could recreate this challenge and raise some money for the Guide Dogs charity along the way as they benefited from the original event.

Below is the article I submitted about the restaging of this event which took place in September at the Goodwood Revival and should have appeared in the latest edition of TrAction but it failed to make the editors cut and was to be held over to the January issue. Naturally, I was very disappointed about this having put two years of work into the project and given assurances that it would be in the 'next mag'. I cannot see the point of holding it over to January/February for by then it will be at least five month out of date and so I have reproduced it here on the web.  One would have thought that it it might also have been given some prominence on our web page as the TR Register very kindly made the donation to the Guide Dogs charity but that didn't happen either. In my opinion the Register wasted a wonderful PR opportunity because they failed to get on board with the project. At least it did make 'best article' in Octane magazine and 'The Auster' so it did reach a wider audience but it could have been so much more.

If readers can detect that I am feeling rather disillusioned over they way this whole project has been handled by the club then you would be right. However, that wont change things so enjoy the read because it really was a great event even though it was beset with problems right up to the last minute.

No point in going to Wales as you will require a person with a red flag to cycle in front so that none of you exceed 20 mph.

    Ian Cornish

Very true Ian  and of course we would have to allow cyclists and tractors to pass us  but I know some places where to avoid all of the dreaded 20 mph signs .  However, Wales will have to wait until 2025 as I can now confirm that we are now heading off to explore the east coast . More details to follow but its already proving popular with seven places already reserved.

  14. Following this years very successful (and oversubscribed) coast to to coast run  I have started making plans for next years run.  However, now that Malvern has been booked for the 28th-30th June next year,  I am going to have to bring the date forward so as not to clash with the IWE.  I am therefore thinking the 12th to 15th of May. which will avoid the busy bank holidays.

As for the route, well there has been some discussion as to where to go next year. At the moment the choices are East Anglia based in the Suffolk/Norfolk area or a return to Wales.  However, it has also been suggested that we should spread our wings a little by taking in not only the English coast but the French one as well!   For this to work we would need to factor in the ferry crossings to the price plus a two night stay at a Chateaux in the Normandy / Caen area where there is a lot to see and do.

If you are interested I would appreciate it if you could provide me with some sort of feedback on either of the options above please.

For those of you who have never done the coast to coast before the format is simple.  A decent hotel is selected and two nights dinner, bed & breakfast are included. with the option of a third night prior to the event taking place to facilitate those who want to arrive in good time before the event.  In the past I have always tried to keep the costs down to below £300 for two people sharing a room  but that seems unlikely for next year given the state of things.   When I get some feedback I will be able to provide more information in due course.  Meanwhile, remember that places are limited to a maximum of 20 cars so do  register your interest asap via the email below.

  15. I regularly drive into Wales and my journey takes me along the A40 and from Brecon to the coast over some very nice flowing roads but which are now littered with 20 mph signs . No one actually voted for any of this.  The politicians wont be satisfied until they have reintroduced a man with a red flag walking in front of our cars.  In my own village here in England a circular came round from the local council asking for support for a 20 mph in my village as it would improve road safety and cut deaths and accidents. When I asked him for the data to back up his claim, guess what? no data was available!  It's a CON !

  16. I know your log refers to 4VC attendance at IWE but you shouldn't forget the two initial events held at Donington Park Ian. I know the first one wasn't called an IWE back then, in fact it was really only a day trip  but the second one which Alec Pringle and I helped to organise was an international event  as there were a number of cars from the continent on show. If my memory serves me well the winning concours TR2/3 had been involved in a road accident on the way to Donington but it was still head and shoulders above anything else we Brits had on display at the time.  I think that particular car also had a union jack painted under the bonnet  which we all thought was rather neat at the time but it wouldn't cut any ice with the concours people these days.

  17. Having been to every IWE apart from one year  at Peterborough where it rained all weekend and the infamous one at Malvern when the police wouldn't let me go any further.  ( I'm not counting last years debacle which wasn't an IWE in any shape or form) the fact of the matter is that the majority of TR owners do live in the southern part of the UK. if you couple that with our members age profile,  we now have many 70 year olds who are now reluctant to drive more than a couple of hours in their TR so having an IWE back up at Harrogate or anywhere near there just isn't going to be viable.   Financially, it might even pay the TRR to find a place in the South East so that more of our continental friends could join in and make it a truly International TR Weekend.

A few years ago I floated the idea of having some one day regional events  in different parts of the country but that idea wasn't supported by the board.  Pity because it could have solved the problem of people feeling left out and having to travel 300-400 miles or more to a TRR meeting.

Now the club has committed itself to go back to Malvern next year which is I think a good thing.  Sadly I won't be attending as I am already booked to go to the USA that week.  ( sighs of relief all round I hear!)  Now the membership survey has clearly given the management team a clear indication that they want a three day event. Last weekend's event at Shepton Mallet was in my, and some others opinion, a complete waste of time.   Nothing was planned for the Friday. very little happened on the Saturday and the Sunday was more of the same.  Most people were packing up by midday and heading off home.  The catering offer was pretty poor with just three vendors I think. Why no fish and chip van or curry offering? You see  loads of these different catering people at other events so why not at Shepton? We had them at Stratford.

I think the reason for this is two fold. First of all I don't think the MT really wanted to offer  us a proper IWE weekend because they had nailed their colours to the MG weekend at Silverstone. It was only  the members who made them rethink things  and so we got a thrown together TR@70.    Secondly, many traders were noticeably absent from Shepton because they had already allocated their marketing budget on going to Silverstone.

Friday has traditionally been the day you arrive and meet up with old friends. Saturday is THE day when all the action should be on site  and Sunday should be about the prize giving and getting your last minute bargains  Why anyone would want to go on a scenic drive having just driven 150- 200 miles down to the showground beats me  or am I missing something?

As for costs,  well I understand that Shepton may well have broken even which is a good thing for the club after last years fiasco.  Hopefully, the MT will ensure there is a decent enough budget to put on a first class IWE at Malvern with some extra attractions thrown into the mix.  For example, why not invite  some of the traction engines  that are based less than five miles away at the Welland Steam fair or even the Ferguson T70 tractor brigade? Surely the Morgan MC  would be up for joining in as Malvern is also their spiritual home and many of them use TR engines.  And if there isn't enough money in the kitty then why not cancel going to the one of the NEC or other car shows next year?   I know they are a showcase for the club but we need to look after our existing members first  and if we want to encourage people to join, why not offer a really big discounted offer only available at Malvern.?

    Just a thought........

ULEZ is nothing to do with air pollution just cash generation. Respiratory disease has aways being endemic and now more related to smoking, vaping added to pre-existing illnesses such as COPD/Asthma.  The figures are simply been manipulated for political gain. People are not bothered about the car being compliant or not its an unfair tax full stop and I would suggest restricts peoples freedom of movement based on the ability to pay added it now seems peoples ability to have free speech which has also quietly been removed with any opposition put down with the usual default of the r card followed by other woke bs.

Some years ago this country was able to declare that TB ( tuberculosis) had been eradicated.  That was a great plus for the National Health Service and especially for London where TB was was quite common.  However, TB is now back  and is on the rise in London, Leicester and places like Bradford with Scotland having the highest rate of TB mortality for women.  interestingly, our prison population is also a hot spot for catching or developing TB.

Why is that  you might ask?  Well the government's own website says that the rise in TB is due in part to immigration from high risk countries where TB is endemic and yet it was our very own government - whose main job is to defend and safeguard its people-   that allowed this to happen by removing the need for international travellers from countries like India and Pakistan etc. to  have certified proof that they were not carrying the disease.  The reason for getting rid of this certificate was because it was thought to be discriminatory.  Well that may well have been the case but the upshot is that our country, which not so very long ago was declared free of TB, is now experiencing an alarming growth in it.  Having eradicated TB it was madness to allow it back in just because some people objected to getting a clean bill of health.

Mass International air travel has been one of the greatest strides in technology  but it has also been one of the biggest vectors for its ability to spread disease around the world.  In contrast, the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic took over six months to spread around the globe due to it being transmitted via world shipping routes. Covid took less than six weeks due to air travel but did we stop people arriving from Covid hit countries? No we didn't and people died as a result.
