We all need to be aware of this.

Yes you can often save a few quid online but come 10 years or so after more and more buy online and people like Halfords don’t exist or just have a few stores in the big cities things might get difficult if you need something now or want to touch and feel before buying.

Si I always try to buy stuff from someone with a physical shop, if I can, so just got a microwave from Curry’s and they price-matched Amazon.

Then had to get a new vacuum cleaner an elderly relative she wanted to try different ones and you can’t do that at Amazon or AO. So popped down to Currys (again) to try stuff out and choose one. Again they matched AO. Ok it was three quid more but on £150 ish not to bad, not even a pint!! (or half on the south east)

  2. Set of five steel wheels removed I was told from a 1973 TR6. Look in reasonable condition to me but I don't claim to be an expert. Been painted with white gloss and surface rust to rear so will require some refurbishment. Four of them shod with 185 vredestein tyres and one with Michelin xs all appear to hold air but are ancient. Bought with intention of fitting but sat in my garage since. £75 collected from Dunstable, Bedfordshire close to junction 9 or 11a of M1 or arrange own courier. Can look at getting the tyres removed first but at additional cost. Please make contact if interested

  3. When I was told by the forumites that I had an American spec radiator fitted to my TR6 with the angled top outlet one kind member let me have his spare UK version for a small donation to charity. So in the spirit started by mkmick the American version is offered here for the same deal, a small donation to a charity of your choice, say £10 collection only or arrange own courier from Dunstable Bedfordshire close to M1 junction 9 or 11a. Looks reasonable condition and no leaks when fitted to my TR6

  4. I had a leak on my Weber carburetor from the brass inlet pipe. On investigation it can out in my hand. I tapped it gently back in and its not leaking anymore running the engine in the garage. It looks like the inlet pipe is molded into the body during construction. I'm wary of driving the car in case the pipe comes adrift again as I feel it likely will. Anyone any advice please? Do you think it likely be ok? Recommend a fix or is the carb now trash?

    Thanks Richard

  5. I bought the Dunlops mainly because of the extra speed rating and the insurance scaremongering around it. Pleased with them and soon forgot about the extra money I spent!!

  6. My Head lights were picked up at mot time after I had changed the bowls. The mot man advised me to draw a line on the back of the garage door about three feet from the car and I think the height was to the center of the headlights and adjust the aim to fall on or just below the line. I done this took car back and it passed ok

  7. I did mine so must be easy as I'm no mechanic. I didn't ask here how to do it so popped the ball joint which came apart no problem after a bit of heat. I bought new gaters from my local parts supplier to save postage not sure of quality yet. I did end up having to have the tracking re-done despite trying to mark the position with tape. Wish I had asked here first now I know quality of parts is suspect. Regards Richard

Whoa, you can't compare between heavy haulage trucks and 40 year old plus cars.

Depending upon the age of the truck it may have "plateau honed bores" which do not get bedded in until 55-60k on the clock, we used to give our demo trucks to  "pet" haulage firms who liked our product to put these sort of mileages on, to maximise their power and efficiencies before offering to actual customers for demo. ! It's also likely to have line injection running at 1700 bar (yes 1700) which offers incredible injection and atomising all which goes towards reducing possible diesel flow down the bores and contaminating the oil, which wears the bores and piston rings etc "screwing the pooch" for starship mileages.

Oil change intervals are enormous, depending upon the marque of truck and mileages a 3 month oil change is not unusual, at up to 60,000 mile in between, and annual mileages of 200-300, 000 range often running with 3 drivers (otherwise can't make those mileages) through 24 hour days.

Oh ok loads of reasons why a lorry engine would last longer than a car engine sounds like they are chalk and cheese. Every day is a school day. However I wasn't comparing with a 40 year old car but Richards Passat. He doesn't say how old but take a guess at 10/15 years. So what kind of mileage might be expected for Richards passat before the engine was toast?

    Regards Richard
