Just ordered 20L as the price is bound to go up

I’m trying hard to enthuse folks around here to collectivelybuy a drum of 60litres. Makes a helluva difference in the price per litre. Of course nobody can agree on the brand to buy, so I’ve got nowhere.

Too bad, I’ve just done my annual oil change

  2. I fail to understand that kind of commercial policy. The customer base is very specific - it’s the one that wants Zddp!
It seems strange to withhold what the customer is looking for!!

  3. For my 3A I’ve been using Motul ‘After 1950’ for the last two annual oil changes and thus about 3500km. So far so good, good oil pressure hot and cold. Good local availability in 2 litre tins

  4. Start by checking the state of the filter where the water arrives. It may begunged up.

Taking the pump apart isn’t a big deal. However the pump components wear rather more quickly than they should, particularly if the water is not too clean. If this is the case the reduction in pressure at the business end is slow but constant.

My betting is on the filter being clogged up.

  5. The splined arms have a little spring which is supposed to clip under the splined part on the shaft. If the splines on the arms and the spindle seem to work fairly efficiently - although they do wear - this is not the case of the clip which is useless and barely holds the two together.

I plan a belt and braces operation using blue Loctite to hold the splined buts together together with the Pete Wigglesworth wiring arrangement to stop them flying apart at the wrong moment.

I should then be prepared for summer

  6. In preparation for a wet summer and even a visit to Malvern, I’m about to soft glue the windscreen wiper arms to the splines in exaspération. They leap off at the first opportunity, the little clips no longer performing their function - did they ever?
Is anybody going to tell me that I’m making a serious mistake?

  7. Surely an easy test is to short circuit the terminals with a heavy screwdriver? If the starter turns it confirms the problem is the solenoid.

We used to do this with heavy construction machinery which had been sitting outside for sometimes years. Inevitably  the solenoid had seized. Did this once on a Cat D8 in the Congo. Once we got it going we sh*t ourselves collectively when a 1m50 angry viper of some kind crawled out from the tracks!

  8. Although I use my 3A throughout the year, thanks to an early spring here, I have been out with my 3A quite a lot this week with the tonneau cover closed on the passenger side and sidescreens in situ (they will be replaced by the wind wings in a few weeks)

Even after some 54 years of sidescreen cars, I’ve not yet figured out how to reconcile driving with sidescreens and tonneau cover. In my case I just let it hang down unsecured inside the door and hope for the best, which doesn’t stop the drips and doesn’t help the state of the tonneau either.

How do you folks fix the tonneau around the top of the door?

As I have 3 TRs do I divide my age by the quantity of cars to lower the average age?

Looks like it may be a good idea!

I’m not clear what you are saying about prices in the UK James. Are you saying sidescreen cars ARE reducing in price, or that they SHOULD be reducing because there is more supply than demand?

Paul, I have no observations to make at all about anything in the UK, which I fled 45 years ago.

One consequence was that I converted my 3A from RHD to LHD, the result is that it was one of a few and is now one of many…

  10. We could open up a new, and even pinned, topic on this theme for those looking for a car!

With the 73 TRs listed in C&C, the 98 in Scout 24 and the 40 in Le Bon Coin, that seems to me an awful lot of sidescreen cars chasing new owners in Europe. Depending on your taste for a right or left hooker, of course.

Inevitably there will be duplicates in these listings.

I can only comment on those for sale here in France. My observation is that most of them have been sourced in the US as they are LHD with speedometer in miles and were probably imported before the US$ went through the roof. Many have been in the same sales yard for more than a year and it would appear that many of the dealers are ‘hung’ with them at around 32000€ on a falling market. There is a even a 3A with a ‘Stamped Book’, ie a write off, for sale at 13 000€ - down from 18000€!

The Sidescreen car, with some exceptions, has become the choice of us silverbacks. Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be.

  11. If you are really enthusiastic for a 3B, you could do worse by scanning down the 40 or so Sidescreen cars that are for sale here in France on ‘Le Bon Coin’ (www.leboncoin.fr - in French of course)

It’s the equivalent of Gumtree - Ebay doesn’t go well here.

Currently there are 2 TR3Bs for sale.

Most of the (overpriced?) offerings are from dealers, most trying to complete their retirement fund with a quick flip, but some are more professional than others.

The sidescreen market has taken a nose dive and there are (too) many on offer. Some for a very long time. A good haggle is to be anticipated and there may be joy at the end of it.

BUT, Brexit has shot down any hope of an easy transfer to Blighty, but it can be done.

Usually do one click on my iPad to get into the forum, but today I got this (photo below) I noe have to type in the full title to get into the register then find the forum site that way.

That’s strange, the only access I use is my iPad or occasionally my iPhone and nothing but nothing has changed for me in spite of all the shenanigans last week. I get straight in to the Forum every time.
