  1. Thanks Rob, that makes sense… I will give it a little longer slowly and steadily..

(Sure I should not really be asking this: Does sealed actually mean sealed, or can you - is it beneficial to - peel off the plastic sticker and can you still open the caps underneath to have a sight in at the level and what is going on?)

  2. Thanks Ralph and Dave, giving me some hope…. (Very) slowly and steadily coming up to just under 11volts - not enough! - with the charge still around one amp.

No concerns with a modern sealed for life battery ‘boiling’ ? - Remembering we used to loosen the caps and add distilled water in the old days

  3. Thanks Rob, and yes it was months (stupid me but time does seem to fly).. I’ll give it a couple of days and report back…

(I’m loving that this really old charger, full of cobwebs and all, is already getting so much farther than all the modern replacements with all the gizmos but, was /am slightly concerned that I threw out another old - but much newer charger - many years ago due to concerns…)

However, I stupidly left it connected without any trickle or ‘maintenance’ charge for some time, to then find flat at only 4.5 - I suspect the alarm was the main culprit!

Maintenance and other modern ‘intelligent charging’ all failed. Therefore, as a last resort, I have resorted to this ‘old monster’ - any one remember them, what period? - which has slowly (over the last day and a bit) and progressively brought up to 10+volts, getting itself warm from the outset and registering a fairly consistent 1amp…. Question I would like to know from all you experts, will I do any ‘damage’ keeping going? - Don’t think I can go back to Bosch without any paperwork? - But, should it have died with so little actual use?

    Good weekend to all

Still…. Lucky to get in with a full crowd riverted to the action?!….. Was on the way back from rare (for me) run out to TVG at Surrey Oaks annual beer festival…… if you didn’t watch the news, this area of Surrey takes you back to the time that everything was well in the world

  6. Yup, you have got to do whatever is best for you…… However, a woolly vest and thick pair of socks would still be much more cost effective and give you substantially better power to weight ratio… B)

    B) Reminds me (although I cannot remember where - might have been my pal who used to work with McLaren and other F1 but now runs the race program for rich and corpulent Aston Martin owners) to get the competitive edge they specify every possible expensive option right down to paying extra for windscreen wiper blades a few grams lighter than standard…….. when they actually would be much better off not over indulging in the pre and post race ‘snacks’ and beverages…

  7. Hi Hamish,

Here’s my  ‘alternative tuppence worth’ …. Although doubtless many will be along to dispute it is really worth quite that mu:Pch …

My 3A, although one of the very last off the line, must be a bit further on than yours started the same leak from within a few years ago… I bypassEd and took it out with intention to repair or replace…… However, don’t know how much sub-zero winter driving you do?…. Global warming is really coming/here!….. I found more space under the dash, no more fan bearing rattling and - importantly for ‘competition cars’ - weight saving all to be of benefit…

Thus far I have been happily running without (admittedly pretty much all non-winter driving)….. I would suggest that this is not something you need to rush into as a priority?!

  8. Yep Sean, I agree - I spent a few happy years living in the S of France - many wonderful and relatively empty roads… (Tough decision though whether to stock up on more than decent red or, the bubbly stuff? <_<)

However, Islands generally seem to have it all compressed in; manic driving up to the top of a gorge, then the sea both sides until you wind back down the other side and again back up another one…

    Cheers Rob

……….. All bets are off on any / every car that runs Webers Rob….B)!

Had them on my Elan Sprint and couple of other ‘exotica’…….. what a joy when on song but, even when popping and hissing they are such thirsty little monsters…

    Cheers

  10. Hi John,

I’ve only ever driven fairly standard 4 pot side screen cars but, in my experience, even with spirited driving and ‘proper’ use of the overdrive you should really be getting close to double your 18 mpg - That is V12 Jaq territory !

Whilst I am sure to be shot down… I’m somewhat amazed to hear a TR2 managing under 20 mpg ; that is not what they are about!?

  11. Although it is pretty quiet around here, this is not meant to be contentious……

Previously, having rally’d / driven the majority - if not all - the commonly accepted ‘best routes’… Having spent the last month in the Greek Islands, I’m going to make the case for the ‘mountain’(?) passes up over and around Crete….  ?!

Anyone done the Acropolis Rally? I can now certainly see the appeal…….. These (EU funded?) hairpins are magnificent and terrific fun…… give me another week and I will be keeping up with the locals and - Or more likely - divorced!……. New tyres required every week on the cheapest hire car in Greece :oB) !

    Sue,

It's called habitat.................insects, voles etc. When they are away in autumn sprinkle wild-flower seeds eg Ox eye daisy, angelica, cow-slip, dandelion etc and other perennials and you'll soon have wild flower meadow to gaze down upon. Miles better for wildlifeand more attractive than a sterile, mowed lawn.

    Peter

This is what you should have explained Crawfie…………….. Five hours hard graft and ………. Turns out you ruined / sterilised the meadow?!

  13. Pete,

As you are aware, I rarely dive in with comments here but, just to say…… I’m in awe!

…..Not for the petrol pipe repair per se…. (That would have also been my modus-operandB)i )……. It’s actually all about your tenacity and resilience in facing set back after set back and continually improving however difficult the circumstances that is the inspiration on here……

Many of us can ‘talk a good game’…….. You talk it better and, importantly, actually continuously and methodically back it up  :)!

    Cheers
