  1. Thanks Nigel, that’s really upsetting.. I knew John well from back in the early HERO days, he was an incredibly interesting character…. Don’t think anyone will mind me repeating it now - I used to say it openly to him back in the day -  he was right up amongst the most wonderfully ‘politically incorrect’ people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and the world was certainly a better place for it!….. He often did not seem to have a‘filter’, he refreshingly just said it as he saw it but never with any malice…

All of my greatest rallying memories and (some very limited successes) are all down to John (and the incredible team he always managed to put together - very much including his quirkily charming wife and daughter)

Rest in Peace John….. the classic rally world is a much poorer place now you have gone

  2. Hi David,

Yes, welcome. - you have acquired a wonderful vehicle!

Confirm I agree with the previous responses, I did convert my head back at the beginning 20+ years ago (I was rallying around Europe at the time and got spooked by the propaganda) However, in hindsight I should and could have better left things alone… The old 4pot has to be one of the toughest most robust motors ever made.

  3. Yep Pete, the roads in Malta used to be ‘interesting’ and fun prior the EU money coming in and the hire cars used to be cheap and very cheerful; we definitely got what we paid for!

First time in the US Virgin Islands (the ones we ‘swapped’ for a few obsolete battleships before the Americans finally joined WW2) I was with a genuine VIP and Knight of the realm to boot. therefore, he got to sit in the front whilst I wallowed around in the back of the old Caddy tank. - It was immediately evident that every vehicle was American but being driven on the UK side of the road- When ‘his Lordship’ queried this our driver explained that they had so many accidents when they initially changed over with the locals  taking the horse and cart to the bars, having a few rums and when they fell asleep on the ride home the horse or donkey would default back to the other side…. And get mangled by a truck coming round the corner……. So much so that the law was changed back to drive on ‘the proper side’…

Thiis led his Lordship to comment that it must be difficult for the driver on the wrong side, particularly on all the blind spots…….. "Not at all" was the cheerful answer "the big advantage is that it is the front seat passenger who gets taken out each time"!

Guess who got to sit in the front for the rest of the visit?

  4. You’ve found it JOhn…… and of course with reputation intact!

It is all a bit secretive and very private, l sincerely doubt any other collection in the world even gets close….. If I tell you that I’m in ‘the middle’ of Denmark see how Google gets on? - He’s got the same initial, ‘T’, as me.. just 400+ more old cars than me! ^_^ (Although, I found one of mine ‘centre stage ‘)………. And, of course, it’s all being run by a Brit..

  5. Thanks Roger, no. JOhn was !00% on it!…. Incredible bit of car engineering- I’ve never said that about an MG before…

…. Unbelievable to say (and back to where am I?)….. This was the most ‘ordinary classic’ amongst a private collection of 400+ old cars you’ve never seen the like of…

Most of you will recognise the red one to the right but, who knows the white further on? - it’s not what you first think….

Is that fireman49 toms car ?

    that’s a good modification.

he did a clever hinge mod  on the front apron too.

Yup, miss you on here Tom…. Hope you are doing well?!….. Get yourself back on here…

.. it will be good to tell you……."That’s Not concours" :P

I don't know why but all of them made me think of India for some reason.

The white car under the the blue tarp at the back looks Mercedes. There were loads of American kit cars that were based on a certain Mercedes model in the 1970s that looked like that, so maybe not genuine.

Very, very impressive Charlie….. Yup, it’s got the ‘badge’ and the locals confirm it’s real….. l’m not sure (although I know nothing about Mercedes - albeit the wife drive’s one - apparently, some of the old ones are worth a bit money even though 95% of them used to be old taxis in the more obscure parts of the world )…… They say ‘copies’ are impossible here - I’m in Georgia - have a look at the below photo all and see what you think…?

We used to live in the St Tropez region of the Var which as you rightly say is 83 plate (we also previously lived near Monaco 06 plate)… This is definitely a local, well used basic model - no overdrive nor wires etc - but for some reason it has very special status down here?

The driver (presume owner?) is a dashing chap - obviously with his choice of wheels but also in that he just ‘abandons’ the car with keys left in (see photo below)before you grab him conversation- my guess (only on the basis that he had a few and one this colour) is that it was Johnny Hallyday old car? - When he had the bar nightclub in St Tropez years ago he had moved onto Ferrari’s etc

  9. Hi Richard, I’ve got and had the same crooklok for 40+ years in the TR… However, my neighbour who knows ‘everything’ informs me that the modern day thieves can ‘do’ them in seconds…… Just for information before you spend too much time and or money
