  1. Thanks Pete for the additional info and Martin for the gasket info. Sorry for the delay in responding but I've been putting some long hours in over the weekend and evenings trying to get her ready for Friday.. how is it that a car that's been on the road for only 4 months can need soooo much cleaning!! Admittedly I take her out in all weathers, and we've had a lot of rain this Summer.. but still! With that and all the little snagging jobs, timing is going to be pretty tight.

Anyhow, will definitely come back to this in the next. couple of weeks once Stratford weekend is out of the way.. :D

  2. Wow... thank you for such a comprehensive post Peter.. :D

Lots of good food for thought in there.. Interestingly, I did actually buy a sheet of 6mm cork gasket to use for the SAH  aluminium rocker cover as it was a non standard size and I thought I'd need to cut my own gasket. I could try that for this purpose too maybe. Your thoughts on the washers make perfect sense, and it shouldn't be difficult to replace the bolts with studs instead..  I feel a bit of a mini project coming... although, this now definitely sounds like one for post next weekend.. you just know something will go horribly wrong when trying to do stuff on a deadline!!

  3. Hi Marco, will do...

So I had the car. up on my ramp last night to have a good look at the sump.. there is definitely a fine film of oil all over the sump, but it's hard to tell if this is seepage through the sump itself, or whether it is as a result of the oil spray from the leaks around the bolts... if I had to make an intelligent guess, I'd say it was coming from the sump itself as it seems to be everywhere rather than just in patches around the bolt areas. I'm going to degrease the outside of the sump this weekend I think and then try not to do drive the car for a few days and see if the oil comes back on the surface.. Will keep you posted..!

  4. Richard, I'm using Classic Oils 20w/50 so I don't think it's the oil.

I'm now tossing up between it being the gasket and/or the porosity of the aluminium itself based on comments above. The thing is, if I've got to take the sump off to redo the gasket, and then I find it's the sump itself once I've reassembled everything, I'm going to wish I'd just swapped the sump when I was doing the gasket!! Thoughts on whether I just go back to a standard sump? I thought the additional cooling and the capacity would be a bonus with the aluminium sump, but not at the expense of my garage floor..

  5. Thanks Mike... but I'm using Permatex High Temp thread sealant already, and in the past I've found that it seals absolutely anything... have you used the Loctite 577 before in High temp environments and had success?

Thanks Roger, yes checked everywhere else that it might be coming from and it definitely seems to be coming down the threads... even the bolts right at the back on the sump have the same issue!

I wasn't aware that the alloy sumps had an issue with leaks? Anyone else encounter this as well then? It's pretty much a brand new sump from SC so I'd hope that they would have resolved any historical issues by now??

  6. Hi Waldi, thanks... I've tried spring, flat and now Dowty.. not sure what they're called over your way, but they're the flat steel washers with the rubber seal on the inside. None of them seem to be working sadly..! I've also tried a couple of thread sealants too, and that's not working either.. ^_^

  7. Hi all,

I seem to have a leak on every bolt holding the aluminium sump on place.. :(  It looks as though the oil is seeping down the thread and then forming a drop on the head of each bolt (see pic). I've tried removing the bolts and putting thread sealer on each along with adding a dowty washer, but that still hasn't seemed to have cured the issue.. anyone else encountered this and found a way of making it leak proof??

  8. HI Phil,

Yes, tested and very effective I believe. If you are sitting in traffic, then you do still get a little fuel smell, but to be honest, I'd expect that whether the exhaust is behind the car or under it.  I can't say that I notice anything at all when on the move though.

  9. Thanks Waldi.. :D

Yes Phil, it was only a few weeks ago.. give Ant a call at ARO and tell him I sent him your way.. he's done a couple before so he'll know exactly what you're talking about.. not a big job. The only thing you've got to watch is if you're on a dusty track, you don't want other TRs behind you.. ask the guys who went to Henley Boat Show about that one...!!

  10. Phil, there is another option... if you check out my blog on the rebuild of my TR6 you'll find that I've had a cut out in the bottom of the pipe and had a deflector plate put in so all the fumes go downwards underneath the car, rather than exit the end of the exhaust... not expensive and keeps the look of the standard exhaust..  here's a link... hth.. :)

  11. Cameron, I can honestly say that I didn't notice any difference from inside the car. Firstly, I've got zero visibility out of those rear quarter windows anyhow due to the roll hoops, and secondly, the rear screen gives you plenty of light so I didn't miss any additional light that the rear quarter windows might have offered anyhow. I much prefer the look without them too..:)

  12. Thanks Miles... yes, that stems back from the days when I used to judge car audio.. it was a real bugbear of mine that the audio had to be coherent with the car, rather than just looking like it had been 'bolted on' as an afterthought..

Sean, hood was custom-made by Trimmania in Finchampstead (near Reading). I personally think it looks better without the windows.. and it has the added benefit that the hood folds down more easily as the mohair folds over better than the plastic. I've got a zip out rear screen too so that doesn't suffer from the creasing you normally get either.. :)
