For 28 years, I worked for a big US corporation, one which grew by acquisition.
In 1986 it was a $1Bn corporation, today, it is in excess of $60Bn.
Every time we bought a company;
- the sales of the acquired company dropped, generally by 1/2.
- Jobs were lost
- The best people in the acquired company jumped ship.
- Efficiency dropped as the merger wobbled into being
- Brands disappeared
- operations merged and locations closed
In 1998 there were over 18 UK locations, with a few overlapping businesses and lots of complimentary products
Now, if my memory serves there are but 6 in the UK
No . . . Faithful intention to improve the business or asset strip, either one its not good news for Moss & Rimmer employees or their customers

Here in Germany we call it "Schwarz verzinkt". Perhaps in English it's called "Japonised"?
Most of the AUTO, BEES, SPARTS, WILEY and BAX bolts were finished black, while LINREAD and CRANES were silver or without finish.
OK, when I dismantled the car, most bolts were brown...
Gents
A question
That would be 'Black Japanned' wouldn't it, or am I on the wrong page . . . .again?

Looking at the before and after pictures, there has been a monumental amount of work done, but, doesn't it look good.
If if we're me, I'd be delivering a huge sigh of relief, the worst part of the job is done.
Mechanicals are, for me, always easier than the mysteries of welding and compound curves
Good job

That will be a shame if it goes for scrap. I have fond memories of Beverleys during my Air Training Corps days in the sixties. My very first flight was in a Beverley @ RAF Thorney Island around 1963/4 when nearly all the cadets were airsick due to that tail moving up & down in flight! A glutton for punishment we flew in them (probably XB259 itself) on parachute drops & night flights from RAF Abingdon. By then my airsickness had disappeared! I will be sending a donation.
I took my first flight in an Argosy, out of RAF Abingdon, as an ATC cadet.
Like you it was back in the 60's, between 1964 & 1968.
We were regular visitors to RAF,s Abingdon, Benson and White Waltham, which is where we went gliding.
Sadly Abingdon is now in the hands of the army and White Waltham is a private airfield.

Still if we didn’t hate that we’d have to find something else, it’s an age thing I’m told. We’re the grumps.

On a modern car go for a Ghost security device and or a tracker

pleased to say my scorpion camper tracker was activated (by me) and I got a tel call from a real person and a text to say the van was on the move without the ignition on or fob in proximity.
we were on the Oban ferry.
very happy with the tracker company monitoring.
Ghost II being fitted tomorrow morning
Expensive?
Yes, but at least I know I'll have a car in the morning

Got a call from Essex Police this morning
The Met have recovered my car! and I'm notified on the day I took delivery of its replacement.
Apparently it's at the Police pound in Perivale.
It's not mine now, so my only interest is in getting back the stuff I didn't claim for on the insurance;
Prescription sunglasses
Boots; walking for the use of
Photos of my wife
Some papers related to the death of my nephew, which I planned to give to his mum when I see her in a couple of weeks.
Some other bits and pieces
Guess what;
There is no phone number for the Perivale pound, on which I can talk to a real, breathing person.
Back to the email and a minimum 2 day wait.
God . . .there are times when I hate the advance of technology, I mean, really hate it -

For additional security you should put your cars key fobs in a Faraday box when in your house, and also site the box as far away as practical from front and back doors.
All my keys are kept in a steel key box, which is sited at the back of the house (in the kitchen)
The trouble is Rob, sometimes, I have to take them out
I now also have a faraday pouch

I wonder where all this is going to end when there seems to be that stealing property is now seen as an occupational hazard to be endured by those who pay their way and contribute to the policing of society. As it is folk are forced to pay extra for additional security which is feeble at best. It's about time if the police refuse to act and the laws are not made severe enough to deter that people should be free to take their own measures to sort out the footpads. Or should we just leave our doors open?
But guess what? I bet the police would be down on you like a ton of bricks and you would end up locked up!
Stopping the RNLI taxi service would be a good start.
Andy
I am sure that the two who helped themselves to my car were professionals
Thieving vehicles is their full time occupation
I have contacted my MP, who does try, in all fairness, she has asked if she can use my email during her discussions with the PCC.
I said yes, but am not holding my breath.
The PCC here is up for reelection in May, he won't get my vote.
The guy at Aviva who phoned me to confirm that payment would be made within 3 working days (it was . ... .3 days), suad that the biggestbsingle reason for the huge hike in premiums this year is due, largely, to the pandemic of stolen high end vehicles
As for the RNLI, I think that immediate repatriation if those in the boats, to their place of embarkation, France, is the immediate solution

We have a very long hedge down the side of our garden and every couple of weeks we used to get “Tree surgeons” knocking on the door offering to trim it. They occasionally became quite aggressive when I said I did it myself.
(They also seemed to always have a good look around the front of the property, no doubt looking for something to pinch.)
Since we had a Ring Doorbell fitted it has almost totally stopped. I sometimes see them walking through the front gate, noticing the doorbell, and leaving immediately.
The Ring Doorbell announces when someone approaches the front door and gives a very clear picture and voice recording of anyone there.
At least with that you would have a picture of anyone who came to look at the car, and if they tried to evade detection it would make you suspicious.
Only downside is that our cat has learnt the trick and now walks backwards and forwards past the front door until we open it rather than walking round to the back door to use the cat-flap.
Charlie.
Know what you mean about the Ring type of door bell Charlie, No1 son has one
Problem is; my front door is built into the inside corner of our "L" shaped house
We cannot put the bell push on a wall, as these are insulation wrapped and rendered, the wrap has no structural strength so will not support screws or wall plugs
Any door bell fitted to the door frame is pointing away from the area I need covered by video
No1 son is talking quite loudly, about security cameras
Talk about stable door, horse and bolted!

Hi John
I think I would ask them if they would mind having their photos taken while standing in front of the car they arrived in and its number plate.
Sorry state of affairs but my Moto is trust no one who I don't know when they arrive at my house.
No doubt the police will do exactly nothing but issue an incident number. Its about time flogging was reinstated?
Glad to hear at least the insurance paid up.
Andy
Andy
Hi
They arrived on foot, which isn't strange, there's a bus stop close and the station is a 30 minute stroll away if you're fit.
Yep, you got the police right . . .a crime number over the phone, then, nothing.
I've written to my MP, has asked if she can use my email to her, when she discusses this with the PCC, but, she is honest enough to say that resources are stretched and I shouldn't expect to see any xhange, car theft is, generally, something that causes inconvenience and increased premiums rather than physical harm.
Flogging?
Greater control of borders and Immediate repatriation to France of illegals would help

It's disgraceful isn't it. Did you hand over the key at any point as in the video John? I suppose the answer is to not have the key anywhere near the car or the individuals whilst they are looking. The car is probably in a container and on its way to Eastern Europe by now.
Edit - I would add thanks for posting and thanks Deggers for the video too - forewarned is forearmed as they say
Keys?
No
I was aware (I thought) of the danger of handing keys over, so no I didn't
The only time a key was out of my possession was when I started the car, but, 2 guys at once are hard to watch
As for the car, yes Eastern Europe or Africa

Well
After 54 years of (mainly) happy, (mainly) incident free motoring, having always paid my road tax and insurance, the bastards finally got me.
My GLc was stolen off my drive, early on Monday 19th Februay, along with the approx £1300 worth (yeh, surprised the hell out of me) of stuff in it.
The car was on Autotrader
Guy rang on Sunday to ask if he could come and see it.
Yes, said I.
2 Eastern European looking guys turned up . . . .tidy, polite and looking at a gullible git.
I never left them alone with the unlocked vehicle and kept a close eye on the both of them . . . . . I thought.
They cloned my key
Turns out I wasn't as attentive as I thought.
They had the car away whilst I was sleeping the sleep of the just.
Spent most of the following 5 days dealing with car insurer and my house insurer for (some of, it turns out) the contents.Once we had the initial rush out of the way, I had the contents payment in under 2 week and the car and the rest of the contents paid for and te claim closed, in 36 days
It's a bugger being without a car, but, on the bright side, I've got a better car arriving on Wednesday, from Blackburn.

I bought a decent original 2nd hand one from California for my 6.
Whilst it cost a small fortune to ship and needed a bit of fettling in order to make it look good, it fitted well and was easy to install
I bought a decent 2nd hand part over a new pattern part, following advice from forumites here
I even remembered to seal underneath it, something a PO had forgotten to do when the one I replaced, was fitted.
Thus I had a happy wife who in turn was happy with not getting a wet left knee every time it rained

John,
It is, as ever, never that simple. There were a whole raft of changes implemented to try to stop the spam attacks earlier this year. Most were not visible to users. However, the combination of two different actions inadvertently stopped non-logged in users seeing the forum. This went undetected by everyone for some time as all the regulars are logged in. It was only when, some time later, Google removed all the indexing, that this issue was discovered and highlighted on the forum. That was on the Saturday. Duncan, who is now our IT guru, investigated and it took two separate actions to resolve the issue by the following Friday. Duncan had asked for guidance from me before making the changes: I felt that giving non-members access to the forum was more important that reducing spam, I hope you agree.
WARNING: spam attacks might return!
The website/forum software needs to be updated to improve security. That will be part of the changes that will come with the new suite of IT later this year. No implementation work has started yet, we are still in the details planning/requirements stage. For example: new requirements came out of the GL meeting on Sunday.
Can I ask that if and when you see a problem like this, please let John Morrison and the moderating team know by pm or email, not just posting. I monitor the forum regularly but not daily. I can miss an issue quite easily. If they cannot fix it, then they can escalate the issue to Duncan or myself.
Thanks, Mick
Mick
That's great, thanks for the clarification.
Would it have been difficult to post a note on the forum to that effect, as soon as it was realised there was an issue?
e.g.
Forumites; We detected today that a combination of two different actions has inadvertently stopped non-logged in users seeing the forum.
We are working on it and will keep users informed
Followed with similar, short notes, keeping the forum in the loop.
Even; "Sorry, still working on it, no change", is still good communication.
Would that have been so difficult?
If it is a problem, let me know and I'll do it, I'll happily update the forum users daily.

Hi all,
This has now been fixed. Please logout and then have a look at the forum: the technical forum is now visible again to the public. Google will now re-index the technical forum so that it shows up again on searches. This will take a bit of time.
Thanks for your patience,
Mick

Can you tell us, or find out and report back to the forum;
- just what was being done
- why no one came onto the forum and warned the users of the potential problems
Fore warned is fore armed
If the forum was told, up front, to; 'Expect issues because . . .', this thread wouldn't exist
Communication is all that is needed.
Why is communication so difficult for the club?
So many issues, niggles and 'moaning' threads would never exist, if only there was some communication.
We have a "Group Leader" here . . . . John M
How about the people running the club and trying to improve the way the TRR web system operates, using John as a conduit?
Always assuming of course, that John agrees to do it

Maybe there's safety in numbers. Concorde carries the prize for the most dangerous (western) design, measured as fatalities per total seating-capacity of the design.
You may be correct Peter, but that adds up to 109 people I think
In 30 years of flying
I think I'm right in saying that every Boeing mark of aircraft has been involved in a crash where more than 109 people were killed.
Your method of measurement is dictated by the answer you want.

I must say that there seems to be quite a bit of support for Norton.
On the advice of our IT guru. I stopped using Norton in 2010
It takes up a huge amount of space relative to its performance so I took James' advice
I use Windows defender and Malwarebytes, with occasional C Cleaner scans
Nary a problem since and a fortune saved by not paying Norton

I have to say that I have had no problems, but, I am also, still, permanently logged in to the forum.
I now am not going to navigate away from the forum pages, in case I'm locked out.
It would be helpful if someone could explain what's happening, just think, if we, the users understood, then maybe we could help by reporting back, issues and successes, maybe, maybe, helping to sort the problem out

I’m afraid this will probably be another capitulation by Greene King to the woke brigade, having already given in to changing established pub names like “Black Boy” and similar.
Having opened that door, they have opened the flood gates and sure enough they are now being targeted for reparations from Caribbean countries where the founding family established sugar cane plantations - I’m glad they are no longer a public company as I can’t see how they can afford the claims if they ever get substantiated and in the meantime legal costs will be high!
Someone needs to start a petition to save the name for what it is - I’m sure there will be many many more people wanting to keep the name than the woke brigade who are making a fuss about nothing as usual
cheers Rich
Went to my sister outside Henley on Thames in the summer . . .I used the A4130 through Remenham, noticed that the Black Boy pub had cease to exist . . . . . . Madness
