The oil pressure has always fluctuated when hot. This was particularly noticeable driving along the A1 last weekend. Cruising at 3200rpm the pressure would be at 70psi for a while and then suddenly drop to 50psi. Minutes later it would recover to 70psi. I have replaced the pressure relief ball and spring with no effect. Anyone any ideas what maybe causing this?

If the pistons were corroded or contaminated when you pushed them back into the calipers this may cause a seizure.

I found that a very light dusting of a black guide coat (white obviously if dark top coat) before flatting highlights any imperfections or orange peel between each coat. These can then be flatted out. Then finish with 2500/3000 grit and G15 compound. Worked well for me. Bit labour intensive but what else have you got to do

Don't listen to them Roger. Do your own paint. Nothing like it when someone says great finish, who did it?

If I remember correctly measuring like this will not give an accurate indication of "roundness" only the size between two diametrically opposite points. The journal could be lobe shaped but measure as if perfectly round. I think there was a special micrometer to measure this or used a dial test indicator. Back in the 70's I worked in the inspection standards room at Hawker Siddeley, Brough so please forgive me if memory is vague it was a long time ago.

When I bought my non overdrive TR4A a couple of years it came with a spare TR6 J type overdrive gearbox. Before fitting what checks as to its condition would be recommended.

Made up my own brackets using two lengths of 2 1/2" x 1/8" plate with two 7/16" AF studs welded to each to pick up the holes in the seat runners and drilled to pick up the holes in the floor. These are bolted across the floor not along it. I used cardboard templates to get the seat and hole positions correct. They work really well allowing full movement of the seats, I'm 6' and have loads of leg room and they keep the seats low. TR Trader do similar ones I think.

To prevent a raised edge and make blending easier stick down only half the width of the masking tape, raising the other half up.

Going to replace the tensioner, chain and gears with the engine in situ. Just wondered if anyone has any tips before I start.

Just replaced my clutch which had started to slip. Friction plate was down to the rivets. I did not notice any change with the clutch pedal so it's likely something more is amiss.

Just fitted new pin and shaft from Moss. Very good taper pin fit in hole.

4A bolts are I believe self locking and do not require lock washers. Just that this depends on the material spec. of the bolts and with replacement part quality being sometimes debatable I will use Loctite as backup.
Thanks for the replies

Just refitting the flywheel using new "stretch type" bolts. Should I Loctite as well or is this just overkill?

Thanks for all the advice. I will extract the clutch in the next day or so and see what needs replacing bearing in mind your comments.

Bearing in mind the age of original Laycock clutches and the fatigue these will have suffered wouldn't new Borg&Beck units be a better option than having the Laycock units reconditioned?

Thanks peoples. I was going to use Milliput as per Peters post but then Alans Helicoil post awaken a dim memory. I had helicoiled a manifold stud hole on my Midget many years ago. Did I still have the Helicoil repair kit, could I find it, was it the correct size, would it work in plastic ...............
Well to a fanfare of trumpets......yes, yes, yes and YES!!!!!!

The thread has stripped in my original gear knob and I wondered what was the best way to repair it?

TR Trader do them. They are on their web site.

I used damp proof membrane. Comes in a variety of roll lengths, widths and thicknesses from any builders merchant or Screwfix.

Just wondered what type of jack people carried in their TR's. I don't fancy the original side jack and bottle jacks are a bit tall. So is the scissor jack the answer or maybe a racing trolley?

Dramatic or what.
Never had a problem with my painting but it does depend on the prep of course. A quick flash over will probably result in problems whatever was used.

After trying a couple of overpriced sealants ended up using Screwfix Lead Sheet Sealant. Allows plenty of time for adjustments before going off and stays rubbery and flexible.
