  1. The likelihood of Malvern being the setting of the TR Register’s 2024 IWE fits in nicely with my original intention to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Swallow Doretti next year, thus avoiding a conflict with any TR2 events this year.

On 7th January 1954 the first official showing of the Doretti took place at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Six months later on 1st July a party was held at the White Hart Hotel in Buckingham to introduce the Doretti to the British home market.

Hopefully an informal meeting of Doretti owners can be arranged to take place over the weekend during the TR Register’s Triumph@70 event at Shepton Mallet, to discuss possible celebration arrangements for 2024.

  2. Chad Householder reports that:

"Tom Householder passed away yesterday surrounded by family. I’m sure he transitioned flipping the overdrive toggle switch in a right hand drive Doretti with the top down!

Thank you for all the kind words of support over the last 16 months."

  3. After carefully reading back through the car's history file, I came across an 1987 auction reference that reports, "It has just had a full mechanical and electrical overhaul, and the body has been resprayed."

So the question now becomes, "What may have been the name of the colour used for a 1980s UK paint job on this blue metallic car?

  4. Stuart - I am not trying to match the paint colour. I'm only looking for descriptive words like, "Mazda Navy Blue" or "Lada Midnight Blue",  which might remind somebody of a particular name of a metallic dark blue colour that they associate with a specific make of an early 1960s car.

  5. I recently received the sad news that Doretti owners, Pat (age 82) and Harold “Mitch” Mitchell (age 84) of Peoria, Illinois, were both killed in a two-car crash.

Some long-time UK owners may remember their visit to England in 1995 to specifically to attend an international meeting of Doretti owners. They told their US friends, they were wonderfully hosted by Duncan Rabagliati who even loaned them a Doretti to drive to the gathering.

According to his friends, Mitch got so much pleasure from owning his Doretti, more so it seems than his Jaguar E-type, because of its rarity in the United States.

Rest in Peace – true Doretti enthusiasts.

  6. I was looking forward to meeting up with Doretti owners at the Stafford Triumph & MG Show at Stafford and share their disappointment because of its cancellation. In view of the uncertainty of future TR Register shows, I am prepared to start making arrangements for an event to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Doretti in May, June or July 2024. Please let me know your opinion about this suggestion.

  7. Over the last couple of months Tom, a real Doretti and Triumph enthusiast, has not been in communication, but now his son, Chad Householder, has recently posted on Facebook that

"Yesterday, a brain tumor was discovered in Tom Householder. He was diagnosed with an aggressive B cell lymphoma. He has been confined to an assisted living facility for the duration and is actively receiving chemo therapy. Unfortunately his physical and mental state is rapidly declining. Say a prayer or send positive vibes into the ethos."

My thoughts are with Tom and his family.

  9. Chassis No.1252 has recently been advertised for sale. The car was first registered in 1955 as UHU 134 in Bristol and used in the UK until 1990, when it was imported to Guernsey by John Machon and re-registered as 8003. Despite the car dealer’s claim of, “no known or documented history prior to its importation to Guernsey,” a lot of information is available about the car’s early life. For example No.1252 was once owned by the late Alec Pringle, a truly enthusiastic Doretti owner, who commented. “In 1975 I saw UHU 134 (Chassis No.1252), advertised in Sussex and bought it forthwith; an early Doretti with some competition history and in pretty fair nick.” Alec sold the car in 1979 and many years later he said it was the only car he ever really regretting selling.
