Social Scene Report 299

Hi Fellow followers. This year George and Joke Whyment kindly organized our highly successful Spring Road trip, for which we offer sincere thanks. Georges account of the trip is as follow –

Its Wednesday May 11th and seven TR6s meet at Harwich to catch the overnight boat to the Hook for what has over the last few years become the Camb Followers spring road trip.

This year it's to be Holland, a trip with not so many miles but a full itinerary which starts the next morning with a short drive from the boat to the splendid Louwmans Auto Museum in The Hague. We spend most of the day wandering around exhibits before driving 40km to the Hotel Zoetwater at Nieuwkoop, which is in a nature reserve on the side of a very large lake and is to be our base for the next few days.

Friday starts with the threat of rain but undeterred we spend the morning in Alkmaar for the cheese market followed by lunch in a beach restaurant at nearby Castricum and then on to Zaanse Schans for photo opportunities with windmills. Returning to the hotel we eat in the nearby bistro for what becomes a jolly meal.

Saturday finds one or two of us slightly under the weather, but no matter there is no driving today! The hotel has arranged a minibus that is to take us to Amsterdam for the day. We did it all, boat trip around the canals, red light district, Rijks museum, even saw cannabis supermarket (I wonder who drinks cannabis IPA?). It's a good job we had the minibus as most were asleep within 10 minutes on the return journey.

Sunday we had arranged to meet up with TR Group Noord-Holland so following a scenic tulip route which they had given us, we find them at a café for coffee and Dutch apple pie. Today turns into a high point in our trip as thr Dutch group have organised a tour of this beautiful area using a second tulip route. We eventually find ourselves back at Hotel Zoetwater where unbeknown to us the Dutch had laid on drinks and nibbles for a pleasant evening chatting to them on the terrace.

The Keukenhof was Mondays destination where we spent hours. Afterwards we went back to the hotel and hired boats to explore the nature reserve (I had never seen a Stork before!) followed by another lively evening back at the hotel.

In the morning we make our departure, destination the Hook of Holland via a wander around Delft, and the night boat back to Harwich where needless to say it was pouring with rain for the whole journey home.

Our story, however, does not end there as our friends from TR Group Noord-Holland are on Wednesday night's boat for a tour of the Peak District. TRGB our local TR specialists have kindly thrown open their doors and provided tea and sandwiches on Thursday morning for a stopover for the 38 strong Dutch Group and an excuse for about 20 Camb Followers to chat TR.
