Hi All

My windscreen got chipped and cracked on the way down to Le Mans. I know I have an excess with Towergate of £60, do I get to choose who I get to replace and fit, anyone had experiences of which firms know what they are doing with our cars?

Cheers

Carl

Hi Carl.

If I had to sort mine out I would take it to my nearest TR specialist, and let them deal with the insurers.
If out on the road touring, locate the nearest specialist.
However as I have 2 spare screens,I would do it myself first and save the £60 till it were really needed on tour as some companies limit the claims you can make.

Hi Carl,

it's worth bearing in mind that a windscreen claim is a claim - and has to be declared to your insurers in respect of the daily driver also . . . . and is quite likely to affect your premium. Been there, had that argument !

Your policy will probably tell you which windscreen firms Towergate (or rather Allianz) approve, if not then ring Sue and Denise for a definitive answer.

Personally I'd just pick up a new screen and toddle down to my local Autowindscreens depot with some folding stuff. ;)

Cheers,

Alec

Hello Carl

TR Enterprises told me that they use a chap i cant remember who. He came to my house and fitted on on my 6 and he did it next to no time.

Most marque specialists and general service garages alike prefer to use a pukka windscreen fitter - why p*ss about fitting a screen once in a blue moon, when you can employ a chap who does it all day, every day ? Just because you're capable of doing it yourself as a garage mechanic doesn't necessarily make it cost-effective for the customer. A TR4/5/6 screen is a piece of cake to a windscreen fitter.

Cheers,

Alec

As Alec said a pro fitter can do it easy however do not let him cut the finishing trim in the centre of rubber and do not fit the joint at the top till later ;)

At least by going to a TR specialist, they will probably know a good fitter,or as its a doddle probably do it anyway.
As the insurance are paying they only want your £60 excess anyway then they pay the fitter whoever it is!

Had one fitted last year, but not as straighforward as I'd hoped . I used a local mobile specialist, but ended up experimenting with different screens and seals to get a half decent fit, but even then a bit of gap sealer was required (screen frame is straight & true). Pilkington Glass with Moss seal was the worst combination, St Gobain screen (recommended by TRGB) with Revington seal was the best.
